6C 1.2 TSI SEL Harsh Ride & Reversing Light

Post by rbz5416 »

I have a 2015 1.2 TSI SEL DSG & find the ride rather harsh. It's never been great around town when the road surface is poor & it really dislikes speed bumps. But I did a fairly lengthy drive at the weekend which was a combination of poor B roads & crappy dual carriageways. The dual carriageway was largely made up of those concrete sections & the car thudded over every joint. But the worst was a section of B road where the road had subsided causing undulations. Felt like a shock was going to make an appearance through the bonnet at any moment & the car was almost undriveable at 50MPH. The SEL has 16" wheels which means lower profile tyres & I don't know if they're the extra stiff fuel saving versions as well. Any other SEL owners care to chip in with their experience?

On to the reversing light. I live on an unlit road so need a reversing light to be able to see where I'm going when parking on the drive. The single in the Polo is hopeless. Are there any LED upgrades that may make it actually usable?

The overall comfort of ride in 6C Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL:- well my wife has one bought new in August 2015 and I find the ride okay in it. There is not much you can do about the 16" wheels as unless you get 15" steels I'd think - though I use 15" VW alloys in winter, but there is minimal clearance for the front callipers.

My wife and I are old age pensioners, just, and we can handle that firmness okay, wife's last car was a late 2002 9N Polo with 15" alloys and it was a lot harsher in summer with its 15" low profiles on, in winter with 14" wheels it was okay. This SEL Polo feels the same roughly on 15" or 16" wheels. Right now, the only other cars we drive are a late 2009 Ibiza with 17" wheels - it is certainly firmer, but it is lighter, and an early 2010 Audi S4 it is also okay both on its 19" summer wheels and 18" winter wheels.

Motorways with these concrete slabs are just too annoying, almost as bad as crossing a suspension bridge! The M9 in Scotland has a section of that, as does the M1 at its Southern end, both very annoying.

As for travelling longer journeys in the Polo SEL, with only the two of us and a couple of lightweight cabin style cases, I could drive all day in that car, no problem.

Reversing light, yes most cars are not too good in that respect, might try getting one of these Cree LED bulbs.

Next, you have not complained about the "Peeeeeeeping" noises that you hear after the engine has warmed up and you are running with a light load on the engine, VW dealer is ordering in a new pipe for wife's car, not many VW Polo owners are complaining about that issue, so either they are a bit deaf or just tolerate cars making noises - has that made you think about that noise at all?

Edit:- parking at home for me is not an issue, while my driveway is long and not lit, I have a PIR activated light on the front of the garage, big one on house, and when reversing can aim for the lit area of road at the top of the driveway - and lights inside the double garage that are controlled by the same PIR and extended with a extractor fan timer to avoid being left in the dark in the garage!

Is that the one a little like a bird tweeting? I only notice it at around 40MPH with the stereo off. Even then it's intermittent & very low level.

That will be the sound, if you lift off the throttle while it is doing it - it will stop, if you press down on the throttle while it is doing it - it will stop.

That tube was chosen very badly by I guess Skoda as they make all these 1.2TSI engines in CZ. Skoda dealers, it seems, do accept this problem and have easy access to replacement pipes to stop this, VW don't seem to be quite so aware of this and so far have failed to source a new pipe for wife's car, well it did not turn up yesterday as a dealer workshop demanding one from VW stock should have done.

It has been said that a savy tech could demonstrate the pipe's ability to make these noises by simply blowing through a removed tube, repeating that with the replacement flexible rubber pipe should result in no nasty noises.

Edit:- it can also be described as sounding like - "Peep Peep Peep Peep Peeeeeeeeeeeep. Add as many "Peep" as needed, depending on ??? !

Another Edit:- if that car is a 5 door, it will have been assembled in South Africa and wife's car had an exposed battery terminal and the bungs missing on the rear doors where the manual locking access points are, I just ordered in new parts and fitted them to save an annoying wait at dealer's workshop. I think that there were a few other things needing done but I took care of them myself, if I had the part number of the new EVAP pipe, I would have ordered one in and fitted it but VW can't help there so it needed to be a couple of visits to the dealer for that to get done.
