Somethings knocking...what could it be??

Post by Richey44 »

Morning all,

A weird one for you to consider.......the car is running beautifully, but....

A weird intermittent knocking that you can both hear and feel through the steering wheel....VW had it in last week, they thought it was a gearbox mount (up and down the gears its smooth and fine) and changed it under warranty. Alas, the knocking is still there. Happens most at low speeds (not all the time) is very slight, and doesn't effect any element of the car's general running. No warning lights. It also happens when out of gear, free wheeling.....

VW want it in again for two days to see what it is. Mmmmmm, very very odd, and more than concerned that VW think its the gearbox.

Any suggestions?? Left field answers most welcome!! :?

Had a similar thing on a Lancia Integrale, turned out to be damage to the inner sidewall of a front tyre. Scarily it was not noticeable at speed, it only manifested itself when you drove sensibly.

Anything caught in the brakes? I had some damage to the back side of a front disk on an older Polo which the changed a front strut for thinking it was that. Turned out to be a massive ridge on the back side of the disk which only made a noise at low speeds plus a bit of snatching at the wheel when braking.

Hello there,

Thanks for these responses, much appreciated.

Going to have a good look under the car tomorrow for anything visible, or noticable.

If not, VW have it for two days.
