Interior Light Help

Post by lynott »

Ordered a kit of LED interior lights for my 6R.

During replacement all went dark, fuse 21 blown. I had front interior all three working, visors both working, boot working, but it was when installing into the rear overhead that the fuse blew.

Have since replaced the fuse, sidelights are back but no interior lights anywhere, standard bulbs or LEDs. Map lights don't work, door open overhead lights front or rear don't work, visor lights don't work, boot light doesn't work. I didn't have any footwell lights or under door lights.

Obviously now regretting going near them, can anyone make any suggestions about what might have happened and if there's something I can do to fix, please. Currently caring about having interior lights working a lot more than working with LEDs.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

lock car, wait for it to go to sleep (20 minutes), then open.

and check the connectors with a multimeter, whether your problem is a plus or a ground problem.

Thanks for your reply iichel.

Unfortunately it has been left overnight 3 times since the fuse went back in.

I will be checking the connectors when I get the opportunity but that might not be for a while so was hoping to find out if anyone knew of any problems like this arising while changing to LEDs.

I fitted the rear 2 led bulbs tonight to complete the full set inside and out, these are the rear ones i fitted with no problems - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172272209643? ... EBIDX%3AIT

You haven't switched the light switch to off position by mistake have you?

looking at handbook it shows dash panel fusebox
F1 - 40amp - exterior lights, left, interior lights
F38 - 40amp - exterior lights, right, interior lights

so there are 2 fuse for interior light - check both

Robby,

Pleased to hear your swap was successful.

Unfortunately both front and rear switches for interior lights do nothing in any position, all is dark.

Interestingly enough I don't have a layout in my handbook or anywhere else for that matter. I had to find one online, the one I use is on team-bhp.com. I can't see anything for any other than fuse 21 in relation to my interior lights. It was also fuse 21 I was pointed to after extensive googling.

Thanks.

Hmm - maybe the later models had their fuses swapped around which is why i couldn't see fuse 21 listed in the fuse list.
I thought it strange how the book shows 2 fuses for interior lights and exterior lights? are both side of your exterior lights working?

Well if it helps this is the fuse layout I've been using which so far seems to match up with mine.

Definitely all exterior lights working fine since bringing the sidelights back to life with fuse 21.

Looks like your fuses are set different?

If you go onto the VW owners page and type in your reg number you can scan through the owners handbook and check the fuses section - http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/manuals

Have you tried another fuse in case the 1 you fitted is dodgy? maybe a wire has come loose to the fuse holder?

Must be...

Where abouts is the fuse layout in your owners manual then? I can't seem to find one...

I've tried multiple fuses with same result. Also it does work as it brought my sidelights back to life. Strange.

My manual is the edition 05.2015 - the fuse diagram is on page 331 under fuse table

Did you try the link on the VW website where you enter your reg or vin as this brings up the same page as in the handbook on mine

I haven't checked what edition it is but it'll be some time in 2011.

Double checked both link and book itself for layout, diagram or list and nothing.

After searching around, it appears most if not all Polo's of this time weren't shipped with a diagram/layout/list to be found anywhere. Nothing in the handbook, no fuse card in the fuse box or sticker inside the cover. Sounds like they sorted it out eventually, and rightfully so!

Just in case anyone experiences what I did, in the end I tried disconnecting the battery for a minute and it brought them back to life. Panic over!
