6R brake failure

Post by gto »

Hi all! This is my very firs post in this forum but i've had an eye on here - espically Ciclo's Polo for a long time :) I will post a topic about me and my car later.

For almost 1.5 years, i am expriencing a problem about my car - when i hit brakes (not hard or soft doesn't matter ) and cars stops, i hear weird 'barr baar ' pumping sounds from the pedal- then i repress the pedal, the noise goes away. Also my brake pedal is quite stiff. I changed my brake fluid and brakes discs and pads with oem ones (was using another brands) but it did not changed anything. I also feel the brakes are not powerful as well as my friends 6R's. When i took the car to mechanics, they were suspicious about my abs module, but i haven't got abs light on or an fault code on VAG. On web some say it may be from the westinghouse system . I'm attaching a video link downwards, do anyone has an idea ? Sorry for my faulty English, I am from Turkey :) Thank you for your all thoughts :)

Welcome.
It seems that there is air in the brake system.

Bleeding the brake system with equipments for testing and verification that are available at VW dealers.
In the following links you can see the whole process and necessary equipments (including the ABS basic setting for bleeding):

I know that there have been problems with some ABS units, but let us hope just be a simple bleeding.

It is highly recommended to do this process in a VW dealer.
This option is best for you and your pocket but need not be the solution to the problem, at least will get a better braking.

Hi Ciclo, do you maybe know how to activate the ABS pump with VCDS to circulate the brake fluid in the ABS reservoir when bleeding the brakes?

It sounds like some ABS valves enter in function when not needed.

How the brakes perform if you hardly stop from 100km/h to 0km/h?
Does the ABS work properly?

Check all the brakes hoses: they could be damaged and create a problem with the internal pressure of the brake circuit, causing the ABS to not work correctly.

Plus to this, as ciclo wrote, perform a complete bleeding procedure. You need to bleed also the ABS circuit with the OEM diagnostic tool, because when you normally bleed the system you cannot activate the ABS valves, so if there's air in it, it cannot get out of the circuit, causing the brake pedal to be soft, even if you bled the entire system lots of times.

It is possible to bleed the ABS also with VCDS, but I believe the procedure doesn't work as with the OEM diagnostic tool:
03 ABS Brakes-->Basic Setting-->Group 001-->Click on "Go", then follow the on-screen instructions and click on "On/Off/Next" button on the top of the window.

At first it will activate the ABS valves for the front calipers: it will ask you to open both Front Right and Front Left bleeder screws, then press 10 times the brake pedal. The ABS unit will make a lot of noise. At the end it will ask you to close the bleeder screws. Then it will do the same procedure for the rear calipers.
I suggest you to repeat the procedure for the front and rear calipers many times (4-5 at minimum), because this procedure is required for removing very little air bubbles trapped in the ABS circuit. Considering they are very little, the ABS unit needs to activate its valves many time to allow the little bubbles to blend together and become bigger air bubble, which are easier to be espelled off the circuit.

Hope everything is clear.

Don't be superficial about brake bleeding procedure!
