Informative but I've heard some reliability stories about the DSG gearbox. (I've ordered a 1.2 TSI so not a GTI - same DSG box?) If I had heard it was as reliable as a manual I'd have ordered one because I do drive around town a bit.

I've driven a few VAG cars with DSG over the years but never owned one.

If I did lots of stop start town/city driving I'd seriously consider getting one. However, most of my driving is non-rush hour traffic on A and B roads, and I enjoy the manual gear change; the Polo GTI manual gear change also seems very good.

Maybe in a few years time i might be tempted by a DSG; I have a long standing back problem so if this worsens to the point that it makes driving a manual difficult or uncomfortable, a DSG might be the solution. However, at the moment I'm happy with my manual.

For me it was the price benefit, extra torque and the fact i can increase the torque in the future with no huge concerns of blowing an already expensive gearbox.

The blogger mentions several times that manual is the choice of the enthusiast. I think he means some enthusiasts or is he suggesting that anybody who appreciates modern gearbox technology is somehow less of an enthusiast?

A Serious Question prompted by a conversation with a winning GP and International Sports Car racer who is smitten with PDK/DSG and similar technology.....Many people claim they enjoy gear changing.....WHY?

My long dead father claimed that auto advance/retard, synchromesh and the loss of the starting handle seriously diluted the pleasure of motoring. Are we looking at the same attitude?

Whether DSG or manual is IMO very much a personal choice. For me, it's the greater (maybe perceived) sense of engagement I feel I get from driving a manual and changing gear conventionally.

I've absolutely nothing against DSG; it's a very clever, slick piece of technology. I know that with the DSG 'box, you can have that same sense of engagement through choosing to override the car making the gear-changing decisions or you can leave the car in auto mode to make lightning-fast changes. However, that does come at a financial cost that I chose not to pay.

Old gits like me will nod sagely at the mention of Chapperal or the Hobbs Manumatic Lotus Elite. Both proof that robotics involve the driver as much as manuals just in a different way.

The mature racing driver I referred to earlier now drives a PDK equipped Porsche Caymen, he says not having to bother about a clutch means he can brace his spare foot against the baulkhead whilst he hurtles into a corner. I lack his skill, balls or bank balance but I think I know what he means even though it would put the Horlicks in my cup holder in danger of spilling onto my tartan travel rug.

To be fair, not just old people who like dsg, I'm 27 and far rather an auto, but did have a previous gen 1.4 Fabian VRS so perhaps I'm biased? Also the dsg will be quicker in the real world as it shifts quicker than anyone can in a manual.

Although I'm sure we can put theory to practice joe......

I have had both polo gtis man and auto I found the auto to be snatchy when using paddles and you can feel to torque limiter on the box kickin the man is much more pulley through the gears as the torque is not limited if the polo used the wet dsg box like the mk5 r32 and gti it would be a lot smoother and not snatchy

The quicker upshifts are evened out by the extra torque in the manual.

I find it very hard to believe that they are actually the same and that volkswagen spent days testing on a drag strip to make sure lol

Problem is I don't think we will ever know for sure as there are so many variables in a 0-60. Being a manual owner I think the DSG would probably be faster 0-60 and the manual faster after that when you are holding onto each gear for longer.

Yeah I think that is spot on... I find in-gear acceleration is a bit slow for me. Flipping up through the gears is fine, but I do notice a perceived slowdown when it decides to stick in 3rd gear as you are overtaking someone.. the revs seem to take an age to get to the shift zone for 4th. Saying that though I then look at the speedo and realize I'm doing a lot more than I thought!
