Tip removal...

Hi guy's,

Wondering if you can be of assistance as I've done a search here and looked on etka etc, but cant find any info.

Firstly, is it possible to remove the tips from a 2011 6r gti exhaust. And if it is possible what diameter replacement tips would fit. I'm looking at a pair of akrapovic's that are 63mm.

Any help would be much appreciated.

no they are welded on, they don't come off

Thanks for the speedy reply iichel, thats a shame, I'll just have to invest in a miltek or alike.

A saw would be cheaper.

Thats true but looking at it, the pipes bend exiting the back box and bend back just before the tips so I doubt after sawing there would be enough purchase on the remaining pipes to secure the new tips too. If anyone has tried or knows if its possible do let me know as the box is still in great condition, its just the tips are tatty even after wire wooling them.

According to ETKA are these the original tips for the Polo 6R GTI:

They are simply pressed on, so try use a hammer and a piece of wood between and knock them from the backside.

Or a saw, along the tip not across it, unless you have an angle grinder which is much more fun.

Looking at this photo they do come off, how hard that will be is to be seen but I'll give it a go with the block&hammer first.
If that doesn't work the saw may have to be deployed!



No matter what they will be coming off as I ordered these in a semi drunken state last night!

Did you mistake them for beer cans?

Hope it goes well, they should look very sporty, a far cry from the bits of scrap pluming we used to make do with back in my youth.

I hope I didnt give the impression I'm an alchoholic....I only drink once a week...From monday thru to Sunday

After removing the original tips and with some fine sandpaper, chrome polish and elbow grease, they come up almost as good as new.

So I cancelled the order for the beer cans! And will put it towards a miltek or after following a recent thread the Remus system looks and sounds good.

Don't jump too quickly, my contact at VSA tells me they are looking into the legality of switchable systems even when the loud setting is within legal limits. We could end up with a situation where a quiet switchable is illegal but a noisy fixed system isn't. Almost as crazy as the current MoT guidance which is based upon an average example of each model. The mathematicians amongst us will realise that if that is strictly applied over time only one car of each type will pass the test......where exactly did you hide that beer!
