Electric window failed

Post by JamesZero »

I have a Polo (60 plate, 3 door) and recently I developed a problem with the front passenger side electric Window.

I pressed the button to make it go down and I heard a loud clunking sound. When I pushed it back up it struggled to go back up.

Now if I try and push it back down it just makes a grinding noise and the Window doesn't move. From a bit of googling I understand there is a motor and a regulator.

I'm thinking of taking the job on myself, but some people have advised it can be really tricky to replace.

Does any one have any experience or advise with this? Does it sound like the motor or regulator or is it just worth replacing both?

Any recommendations on places to get the parts? I'm not bothered if they're second had, as long as they work!

Cheers

more often than a motor failing, you'll find a window mechanism failing (steel wire, a frame and some cogs that move the window).

Thanks for the reply.

So are they all connected to the regulator? Is it worth trying to replace that first?

Or should I just not mess about with it myself and take it to a garage?

if you remove the door trim panel, you might already see the broken window regulator. the steel wire then is snapped.

OK cool, I'll take a look at it and see what I can see.

Thanks

probably your window's steel wire were broken. thats why you hear grinding noise. you can repair it by yourself, but when you buy a new steel wire set, dont forget that you specify front passenger door. every steel wire set is diffrent for each doors. by the way broken steel wire may harm to pulley. its better to buy new pulley. it means, damaged pulley may make noise or may broke steel wire again.

I tried to tackle it myself but failed miserably. I have the same as you. 10 plate 3 door. Ended up costing £216 to replace :(

Thanks for the replies.

When you say you failed miserably, were you following any sort of guide or video? I can't even find anything like that for this model of Polo?

What was it that was specifically the hard part?

Thanks for any info.

I'm not a particularly practical person but as there are no guides I just tried winging it. I took the door panels off and the plastic cover to get to the regulator. I can't remember exactly what it was but I remember getting half way and then realizing something was riveted on or that my tools couldn't reach a bolt. I then just got fed up and left it so I took it to a garage to get it replaced.

That's the problem I have found. There don't seem to be many guides for this sort of thing!

If I had something to follow I'd definitely give it a go, but I don't wanna just go in blind hoping for the best.

I got a quote from one garage and they want £300 to fix it!!

Thanks for your reply.
