Headlights

Post by Spag_bol »

First of all new member and new Polo GTI owner (2011 plate) so hello to you all.. .

Ok my Question..

My headlights are always on unless my switch is in the sidelights position then they go off, when switched to off (far left) and I start the car they come on along with the running lights is this normal? If so what's the reason?

Thanks.

Please shout me down if I'm wrong, but, standard configuration for front lights in UK does not by default include having the headlights on as DRLs, only the DRLs should be on when lighting switch is OFF or fully "left".

So, either there is a fault with your car, or if you bought it secondhand, a previous owner has changed maybe the coding to make this "happen".

You are sure that it is the headlight dipped beam that is coming on as DRL as well as the DRLs?

No, I won't shout you down and ideally you are even correct.

But on some Polos, the low beam is on as a DRL. in german, this is known as 'dauerfahrlicht'.
dauer is something like endurace, long term, always. a 'dauerplus' is a positive terminal that is always live, i.e. the battery plus.

The dauerfahrlicht is simply a wire from the DRL pin on the light switch to the low beam output.
if you disconnect (remove) this wire (light switch connector pin number 3) and disable the byte 10 bit 0, then all the lights will be off in the 0 position.

To retrofit DRL in the bumper, you simply run a wire from the light switch pin 3 to the DRL bulbs (with a fuse, of course).

Exactly iichel. But do not forget that the light switch (non Auto) decreases the lighting power when the DRLs are located in the dipped headlights.

This is why there are different light switches for Polo 6R. :)

On the other hand, everyone should know everything about the operation of the lights on any car before drive it.

Very much appreciate the replies..

Yes deffo my headlights come on in the far left off position as well as my boring standard DRL's lights which I'm hoping to change to LED's in the future...
