Inside edge Tyre Wear 6c GTI All 4 Wheels

Post by Gee40 »

Has anyone else experienced tyre wear on all 4 tyres?

My car has just had its first oil service with just under 3000 miles on the clock and as part of VWs health check, the dealer pointed out that the tyres were all 6 mm across the tread except on the inner edges of all 4 tyres where it was 5 mm, recommending that I have a 4 wheel Geo check.

The reason I ask is that a lot of performance cars are set up with a slight negative camber to improve handling when cornering and wondered if the 6c GTI was the same. The dealership doesn't fill me with much confidence as they quoted for a replacement locking wheel nut as they thought mine was missing, however it was in the dedicated place in the polystyrene moulding under the boot floor. The very location I would expect a franchise VW dealer to know about!

What a nuisance, so getting a full 4 wheel realignment could, if there is enough free movement in the front lower swivels, alter the front camber, but that still leaves them being unable to do much at the rear!

Sounds like you have the wrong kind of dealership, or maybe you need to start driving like Miss Daisy as I agree with you that providing a bit of negative camber is normally a deliberate ploy to improve road holding.

One other thing, maybe you should take off the 15J wide rims that you have fitted? (sorry!)

Just checked mine. 5k on the clock. As near as I can measure with it sitting on the drive there is a difference of about 0.5mm inside to outside both front and rear. It gets a bit of stick from time to time which might make a difference!! Not sure if this is normal though? Our golf GTI is generally pretty much even wear across the tyre when it gets down to 2.5mm left.
