I know there is mute button top right on the head unit but can you mute from the steering wheel too? I can't see anything obvious

I have no idea whether you have a Polo 6R or a Polo 6C. On the Polo 6R, yes, it is possible but sometimes the button is coded to a different function.
There is one coding in the BCM and one coding in the RNS that needs to be changed, i.e. with VCDS.

OP; I see from your previous posts that you have a 2017 6c Polo GTI. There's no mute button on the steering wheel of the 6c Polo GTI.

Hey, I have a 2017 GTI also, mine has the mute button at the bottom left side of the infotainment system, and a mute button on the left side of the steering wheel. Do you have an upgraded infotainment package or the standard one?

That's interesting graeme. Mine is a 2016 Polo GTI with the standard Composition Media infotainment unit with the mute button at the top right of the of the infotainment unit. I don't have a mute button on the steering wheel;

Forgot to mention I'm on the standard Composition Media too. Strange, from what I've read here there are 2 versions of both that and the wheel then, I think this affects App Connect availability too (or some other feature).

Just for reference, what variant is your car? I'm in a 3 door manual, maybe different setups are built in a separate location with different parts. Though you'd expect it to not be this inconsistent.

My car's a 5 door manual GTI and based on what I've read on this forum and elsewhere, I believe the version of my infotainment unit is Car Net App Connect compatible, although I didn't spec App Connect when the car was ordered and I've not had it activated since. I do have cruise control, so steering wheel volume controls for the infotainment unit in my car are in a different position to yours - bottom of the bank of buttons on the left hand side of the steering wheel; cruise control buttons are at the top.

Yes, same here with wife's August 2016 Polo 1.2TSI SEL (with cruise control 5 door) - why not, I'm sure that switch can be depressed!

Edit:- on second thought, the answer to my "why not" will probably be due to that area of the wheel controls is dedicated to CC, pity though!
