Quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust

Post by gaza1994 »

Hi Guys (me again lol)

So - I've took a video of this, not sure if its going to be much use though!

But anyway, I've noticed quite a lot of smoking coming out the exhaust of the polo - It only seems to do it once the car has warmed up fully and the temp is cold outside (it was 9c when the video was taken)

Is this normal? (everyone else's car that was there wasn't spewing out this much)

Slightly worried that there is something else going on!

The smoke doesn't smell sweet and coolant seems fine (i had the system pressure tested not to long ago and nothing was wrong)

It just smells like normal exhaust fumes (or at least whats normal to me)

i did have to top my oil up the other day (and i didn't over fill it - it was 3/4 up the dip stick on a cold engine)

Any ideas?

That looks more like steam in the exhaust, but it is only showing up due to the lower ambient temperature and high level of moisture in the ambient air. When that engine is using air to burn petrol, one of the by products will always be water, under certain climatic conditions this will give the effect that you have videoed.

Are your fluids still high? Oil, coolant. If so, might be some steam and condensation. Nothing too bad

I'm just about to drive to Edinburgh (which is about a 100 mile round trip) - so will let you know if there is smoke when i start it etc... and i'll check the fluids and let you know

Thin White smoke is nothing and just water vapour.

Thick White smoke is the engine burning coolant.

Blue Smoke is the engine burning oil

Grey smoke can be burning oil or a bad turbo.

Black Smoke the Engine is running rich and burning too much fuel

and that's pretty much all the smokes that can come from the exhaust
