Brand New VW Polo - Handbreak issues
Brand New VW Polo - Handbreak issues
Just bought a brand new VW Polo in less than 24hours the hand break would not lift down and was stuck, the button would not push in. I was at traffic lights during this were i had to battle the hand break for 2/3minutes obviously delaying other cars. As i couldnt park it anywhere as the fear of the hand break not coming down I drove it to the nearest VW dealership where a VW Sales Rep sat in the car and said it was definitely off and she felt it was not safe to drive away so recommended to ring the VW Breakdown line, after another 45minutes they arrived and the guy managed to put some pressure on it to release and now it seems like it should have however with the car being so new i've requested them to have a full overview of the car to confirm this. They arranged for a courtesy car for me however I didn't pass their insurance criteria's so they said to get a quote and they'll reimburse me. I then rang up to double check the cost was okay and was told it wasnt and that they'll have to collect it at 7am or i'll have to drive it in to them. Im a bit angry as its such a new car and it seems like the checks weren't followed to the correct levels. What advice can you give in a situation like this, im not getting very far with VW and i've waisted 2 days of my time on this issue and the car has only gotten handed over to me less than 48 hours ago.

might sound daft, but when you where trying to push the button in, did you also push up on the hand break?
Re: Brand New VW Polo - Handbreak issues
Yeah doing that but with force is what finally got it feeling and acting as expected, just very strange and didn't expect this sort of thing with a car so younggaza1994 wrote: Mon Oct 02, 2017 4:02 pm might sound daft, but when you where trying to push the button in, did you also push up on the hand break?

Re: Brand New VW Polo - Handbreak issues
Sounds like your supplying dealer needs to sort this out, quickly, even if the brakes were sticking/jamming on, the handbrake "handle" should still have been able to drop down, so sounds like the actual "handle" or its ratchet is sticking on! The insurance thing is unfortunate and I can see that this other VW dealership would not expect that problem. I hope that you get this sorted out soon.
Please keep us posted on the outcome of this and then maybe consider how it all went in the end and if necessary name and shame the supplying dealer as it is down to them to sort you out quickly, VW did not get your money, that dealer did and if that dealer sources cars that fail quickly, then they need to sort that out with VW in their own time not your's!

I think gaza means did you pull up on the handbrake to release the pressure on the ratchet and then push the button in.gaza1994 wrote: Mon Oct 02, 2017 4:02 pm might sound daft, but when you where trying to push the button in, did you also push up on the hand break?

I was rather hoping that the OP had used a car before this and had worked out that you need to remove/relieve the load on the ratchet a bit before pressing the button in - maybe I was wrong there?
Not an ex-electric handbrake user?

Sound's like the handbrake cable is too tight, how many notches could you bring it up before it got tight (not an easy question from memory but please have a guess)

My brand new Polo pulls up and locks on the second notch only. Feels nice tight handbrake
