I know you metioned in passing in another post about your 5th gear ratio... i can't find the original to ask a further question in, so i want to put it here instead.

Basically you said 5th was like 20mph or so per 1000, it seeming like an AYZ or similar which i may be on the hunt for if i keep the car (or just find another with it in). Just right for cruising in a 1-litre, a bit quieter and easier on the engine but not drastically under-torqued.

However what's your 4th like? Just so i can be sure...

And crucially, whats the comparitive top speed in those two gears, if you've checked it? (maybe you just cruise at the limit, i dont know) I'm holding out for a little over 90 in 4th and mid 80s in 5th, if the maths work.... ;)

Anyone selling an AYZ or a polo with one in? :D

ayz i take it is a gearbox which u believe is ideal for a 1.0ltre? in that case thats what i would be after!
do you no what polo it came out of? is it the 1.0ltre classic which was fitted with a five speed?

by accident in another post, just kind of stumbled over the fact of metz having one of those in his saloon....

so yeah :)

its just the vanilla 1.0 4-speed with a +20% 5th gear bolted on :D

If it's the same one fitted to mk2 1.3's with the 4+e box, there are two in my scrappy atm, I'd happily get you a price for one. One's an E reg CL squareback, one's an F reg coupe of some description.. don't think it's a coupe S, but it's got rev counter, front spoiler, sport seats etc. Must be a special of some sort..
Personally I'm -really- happy with the 5 speed box I've got in now.. don't know the code, but it's from dubs' mk2 1.0 classic, I think 5th is about the same if not a touch higher than my old 4th. I get 70mph at around 3,800 rpm. The car's just completely different to drive with it in though, no more struggling for a compromise between power in 3rd and economy and quiet in 4th, it's lovely :)
Anyway, that's irrelevant :) But let me know if you want me to get a price for one of those 5 speed boxes.

my gearbox is indeed AYZ i havent really tested the rpm and speed yet but i will do if i remember tommorow, i do know however (i've been on m1..er i mean a private track 2nite) 80mph is 4000rpm and 90mph is 4500 rpm, 4th gear seems to run out of steam about 60mph where dropping into 5th makes it fly (if a 1ltr can) again.

Let me know what u want me to find out and i will try.
At 90mph the car still wants to go but my brain tells me to ease off a little.

thats right wierd unless either your dials are badly off, or your wheels are tiny and you've recalibrated, or both........ :D
personally if i'm looking for speed in my own (supposedly having same 1st 4 ratios as yours, and same engine) i'm not even getting into 4th from 3rd until 70-75mph, let alone looking for 5th at 60... if its what i thought it was, then 5th should give less pull than 4th, end of story.. unless of course it's just the feeling and sound of it because it's at maximum grunt at 5th around that speed :)

are you absolutely certain it's not a GT box and your speedo isn't reading slightly high/tacho slightly low? :(
pretty decent to be getting 90mph with it only pulling 4500rpm though, by rights there shouldnt be enough power there unless the actual curve is a lot nicer than i'd hoped! (still getting >50lbft at 4500... bonus!)

 thatd probably be the ol' 8P which now seems to be too high geared for my purposes... having a higher rather than slightly lower 4th isnt quite what i'd hoped ;) still... if it's intact... not too pricey... and i can find somewhere to offload the polo whilst still being the owner/keeper (and getting something else in the meantime) it'd be cool to play about with trying to swap the differential reducer gears while it's effectively SORNed.
(especially if the "smaller" 4sp pinion can be made to work with the "larger" 5sp ring - slightly shorter and non-VW spec 4.333 final drive ;))
I'm -really- happy with the 5 speed box I've got in now.. don't know the code, but it's from dubs' mk2 1.0 classic, I think 5th is about the same if not a touch higher than my old 4th. I get 70mph at around 3,800 rpm
GT-style box mate, the shorter geared variant :D (the actual gt was a bit taller all round)
at least i can still I.D. THAT with some certainty

....ish ;)

a price would be appreciated but not if it'll put you out.. want to concentrate on e.g. getting the stoppers sorted first

5th gear 60mph is 3000rpm 70 is 3500rpm

no, fair enough like..

just wondering on the "out of puff at 60" thing for 4th ;)

ps compared to even my 155s those tyres are dinky! 21.3 inches total vs 21.9, or 22.5 std...
they always looked that way however, which added to the oldskool pimp bling (get that mother on hydros!) :D

Well, whatever it is, it's wonderful :D Really takes advantage of the (somewhat limited..) power of the engine in a way that the old 4 speed box just wasn't designed to do. I can now, for example, overtake slow moving cars without worrying if I'm actually ever going to get past in time..

No problem, I'll ask next time I'm there for you.
