Aw, isn't that part of the fun of it?

Maybe a Panda 4x4 would be perfect actually.. just as much fun, but it might actually survive the trek..

As for the trousers, yeah, they rule don't they?

theres one round the corner from me....... cherry red paint in surprisingly good nick next to the rusty old steel wheels, and nasty beige seat fabric (the less said about the "support"iveness of panda seats the better!! would you really want that for 10k miles?)

whoever dreamt up putting massive bull bars not only on the front but also the back of a Lupo-class car constructed of tinfoil... genius!

Well, you could always get some supportive seat covers for it.. to be honest I think the kind of roads you'd be doing 10k miles over would be more the issue than the seats

In these parts the bull bars are a bit of a gimmick.. but if you ever go to italy you'll notice that the front and back of fiat panda 4x4's are the only bits of any car around that are still in one piece

Even though the bars themselves tend to be sitting at some dodgy angle courtesy of the italian driving style..

It would be good fun, and maybe I could pick some driving experience up without actually having a licence (on the basis a UK driving licence counts for nothing on an enduro rally). Hmmm, so that Â£60 for the passport, Â£200ish for a Panda 4x4...

I've just found a friend of mine who's really into the idea, really wants to do it

We're just working on fundraising ideas atm, we think it'll cost around Â£3500 between us, watch this space

Unfortunately, the car in question probably wouldn't be a polo (unless we could find a knackered 800cc mk1, but that's unlikely).. but you should all feel free to contribute should you wish, I'm sure I can get a uk-polos sticker on there somewhere

That sounds like quite a rare one "Sizzely" or summut like that - only made a few of em - I used to be car salesman in a previous life.

PS Panda 1000s are quite a quick little bus - very light and that FIRE engine revs like a banshee and I've not seen one die with an engine failure yet unlike the earlier engine which was a agricultural POS....... Be my choice over a mini any day for the Mongol rally but there is no way I'd use the 4x4 version as the engine was the old one and the tranny is awfull and who need 4x4 on summut that you can push uphill with finger pressure!!!!

well in that case, a learning experience for you, meet my friend's (ex-) Panda Dance 900cc FIRE which conked out with busted piston rings or something. uneconomical to repair so they just gave it to someone.....

legendary car though. you could fit 6 students into it with a bit of ingenuity and still manage 85mph. after about 10 minutes of maximum throttle....... but you didnt need to lift off for the roundabout at the other end, unless you were worried it would bounce through the dip and turn over!

engine sounded like a football rattle going overspeed as well

PS The engine in the 4x4 was the 1108cc / 55hp unit still being used in Seicentos and the like isn't it?
