Dust's Polo BlueGT 150 DSG

Post by dust »

Hello all from sunny Spain,

Just opening this thread to introduce my new polo and keep track of the mods i will be doing to it. Just got it second hand to be my daily driver and having driven it over 500 hundred miles i already "discovered" 2 or 3 things i want to do it...

First of all a couple of pics (sorry about the quality, framing, etc.. but you get the idea):

I think it is a pretty good base; it's already got all the nice bits and with 3 or 4 mods it will be done i think (and hope  ) The first two things i would like to do is retrofit the rear pdc and improve the audio system... Mine has 6 speakers but to be honest, the sound clarity and quality is pretty bad... I have seen @iichels 's amazing thread with the dynaudio retrofit and that would be ideal, but i am not a handyman  so i will have to pay somebody to do it... initially I was thinking about retrofitting the polo beats system, but if the dynaudio retrofit is possible and doable without having to hire a nasa engineer, i would try to do it that way...

Also i have to put some security measures, as it is my daily and it will spend most of his life parked in the street, so i need to protect the odb and posibly install some sort of electronic circuit breaker (don't know if it is the right term)

Those are the plans for the beginning... once i do those some more will probably come, but this is the main thing at the moment...

Edit: Pics fixed

Regards to you all

Hola and welcome!

If you have any questions, feel free to write then. Your compatriot ciclo has done the retrofit of rear tweeters and the Helix subwoofer. I think that would also improve the sound a lot without the fitting of the dynaudio or beats system.

Thanks iichel,

yes i will ask! and yes, i have seen ciclo's thread, another amazing build... you guys are so talented!

How difficult is the coding of the dynaudio set up?? will the typical run of the mill coder know how to do it or it requires lots of fiddling around? Also, how many watts does the dynaudio produce? (not planing on doing a party on the car but it usually is a good indicative of the quality of the system)..

I come from a logic 7 with 11 speakers and my standards are high..

Also, one last question, is there any way to know all the extras that the car came from the factory with the VIN number? I googled it but i have not been able to find it (with the bmws is very easy) maybe i haven't found the right website.

Thanks again!

Edit: sorry for the repeated pics on the first post, everytime i try to edit it, it corrupts the pictures and erase them... I don't know why 3 different pics appear as the same... there has to be a bug somewhere because i triple checked it!)

Those are some fair questions. Concerning the coding, it's really easy.
You'll have to change a few bytes in your RNS to change the outputs from speaker outputs to line-outs and disable the monitoring.
It's well documented in VCDS. I'ts quite easy, nothing to worry about.
The output, I'm not 100% sure but I think it's rated at 500W RMS, which should get your ears entertained very nicely.

I think it's good to make a remark about the subwoofer, there is an 8-channel set without a sub and a 10-channel set with one.
I went for the full 10-channel setup, because that's how I am.
On second thought, I think the 8-channel setup is just as nice. All the speakers are replaced and the bass speakers in the door have a very good bass in the already.
When cranking up the volume a bit, the subwoofer only has a very modest contribution to the new orchestra in the car.
I'm not sure I'd fit it again, since it takes up quite a bit of space but doesn't do a lot.

And it might be good to know, the tweeters in the a-pillars are to be replaced as well and with the (thicker) Dynaudio tweeters in there, the A-pilar doesn't fit perfectly.
It hasn't bothered me in the time I had in in there, but it might be good to know.

The most work, really, is the wiring. The car will go from 2 wires per corner (8 in total) to 8 wires from the RNS/RCD to the Dynaudio amplifier and from there, 8 sets of 2 wires to each speaker (and optionally 4 to the subwoofer).

If you take your time to do it in a structured way, it shouldn't take you much more than a day. Then the speakers in the door are to be replaced, you'll probably have to drill the rivet out and rivet the new speakers in there. Then there is the 'issue' of making a new accomodation for the tweeters, which will be left to your own creativity.

If you want to see what equipment you have from factory, have a look underneath the boot carpet. You'll find a white sticker there, about 10x15 cm with all the information you need. VIN, engine code, gearbox code, paint code and a list of so-called PR codes. These PR codes, three letters/digits, will tell you the factory options that your car came with.

Many thanks for your detailed response iichel, maybe i should look again at the retrofitting the beats audio system as i guess it is more plug and play... i read somewhere here in the forum that the system is not that good, that it distorted a bit when pushed, but maybe it's worth another look... there are a couple of complete beats systems on ebay for around 350 euros... and scirocco 10 channel dynaudios for around 550... decisions decisions... for a 200 euro difference it looks to me that the dynaudio is worth it, but maybe i am wrong...

regarding coding, don't bother, i am a complete ignorant on the subject, it is like listening to chinese  so the whole thing will have to be installed by someone else...

Thanks for that tip about the extras, i will take a look at it tonight and report back with, probably, further questions.. haha.

Also, on second thought, i don't know if retrofitting the pdc or the rear camera... my polo is a 6c, and does not have navigation... any issues with that?? one option easier and cheaper than the other?? Also, what is the best place to buy all this stuff??

Many thanks again for your help iichel, greatly appreciate it!!

Be aware that a Scirocco Dynaudio amlifier might not work in a Polo 6C since the latter is MQB based while the first one isn't. My polo is PQ based just as the Scirocco. I guess you need a Dynaudio system from a golf 7. But I'm not 100% sure.

Ok thanks iichel... it's looking more and more like the easiest way is the beats system retrofit.

Also, i found a rear R-Line rear bumper with the pdc sensors for quite a good price, i suppose that the wiring can be purchased as a stand alone, correct? where do you guys source this kind of things, straight from volkswagen or there is any specialist shop??

Thanks!
