Thank you everyone for your help! What I'll do is when I'm able to go out to purchase a new car I'll either get a 1.8 if available or look for a decent 1.4, atm I'll stick with my trusty SE

I was probably lucky. I had a twin charger in a 2011 Scirocco that I tuned to stage 1. I ran it in carefully for the first 3k miles, gave it oil and filter changes every 6 months changed the plug gap from VW spec and had no problems in 50k of motoring. Quite a few did have problems and that including the Golf 1.4. Pity as it was a lovely smooth engine when running well. Having said that, my advice would be don't buy the twin charger as you do not know its history. As said above, wait until you can afford the 1.8. It has the same power to weight ratio as the 210bhp Mk6 Golf which is probably why the insurance is high and my description of the Polo GTI is 'a roller skate on steroids'!
