So my Polo has come back with "Offside Front Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect" as a MOT advisory.
Is this a common fault on Polo's of that age? and how much to put right? Any preferred suppliers of shock absorbers?

Re: Shock absorbers
I think you need to say how old it is if you want information about Polos “of that age”.
If you do have to replace it is always wise to do both sides.

Re: Shock absorbers
Edited to remove complete garbage - wrong end of car!
Oh, bother, scrub that, your issue is front struts!
I'd use ECP and Sachs parts though they cost twice what the rear ones do, this is not a very nice job to do as the drive shaft needs to get released from the hub on the RHS and probably best plan to replace the top bearings at least while you have the strut off the car, and if the springs are badly rusted even the springs and you really don't want to have to do or pay someone to do all that work again as long as you own that car.
A Proper Edit this time:- question, have you owned this car from new, and/or has this car had either of its front road springs replaced? The reason that I am asking these questions is, it has been documented somewhere in these VW Group forums, that unless you are very lucky with these cars, ie Fabia MK2, Polo 6R and Ibiza 6J, replacing a broken front road spring usually ends up with a leaking front strut - I can't say why exactly, but it sounds like these struts do not like being worked on when they have aged a bit. None of that changes the fact that your front strut is leaking, but it might point to why it is leaking, as said replace both sides.
Final point, my older daughter owns a late 2009 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 16 86PS SC, I was using/looking after that car while she worked abroad, a few months before she returned to work in UK, that Ibiza suffered a broken front road spring, I did not think twice about what I was going to replace on that car as she uses it travelling to/from work etc, so, I replaced both springs, struts, top mountings, upper spring plates and upper bearings - I was certainly not going to be interested in messing around in that area again ever for that car.
