Hi all
going to service my daughters 2005 9n3 polo 1.4 16v petrol next week and am having trouble finding the oil spec, in hand book it says multigrade / vw 501 / 502 / 503 / 504 that i think is a 5w 40 fully synthetic
just want to make sure that its correct
Thanks Tim

Re: engine oil 5w 40 ??
Normally 5W30 long life 3 is the recommended grade but 5W40 is also acceptable for regular time and distance changes.
Re: engine oil 5w 40 ??
I use 5w40 in our 2002 1.4 16v Polo.
I tend to avoid the Quantum stuff because it appears to make the engine slightly noisier mechanically.I have been mostly using the ECP TripleQX 5w40 and the engine seems happy enough on it (I usually do oil changes in Spring and Autumn - so @ approx 6/7,000 miles).
I am considering trying some better quality oil next time

Oh yes - the other thing I forgot to say Tim
I always stick to the same brand of Oil Filter as the different brands can have a different size of 'Hex' - I usually use Mann filters -usually a good price if on 'special' at ECP although I sometimes buy online from ebay etc (sometimes carparts4less ? - the ebay ECP outlet).

Re: engine oil 5w 40 ??
If you still had an original VW Group lying around, you would normally find part of the manufacturer's own part number printed on them, I always thought that at that period in time VW Group used Mahle or Henske(sp), but I think that they changed from black Mahle filter to grey Mann filter for parts department sales, ie shared the supplies between Mahle and Mann, though certainly my wife's 2015 Polo's Mann filter bought at a good price from ECP does have some of the same item number ident on it as the official VW Group supplied one, same for the one fitted to my daughter's late 2009 Ibiza 1.4 16V 86PS which will be the same as your 1.4 16V BBY engine.

I use Fuchs 5W40 witrh oil change intervals as BVS above.
Tried Shell Helix 5W40 earlier. That's pretty good too and cleans well.
Reverted to Fuchs as it runs a bit quieter.
