VW dealer fit (upgrade) Sat Nav

Post by MarkTS74 »

Has anyone one on here had the aftermarket Satnav module fitted to their VW (the all in £599 fitted) one that have been advertised & flyers you see in VW dealers at the welcome areas.
Forget the make - asked the parts guys the other day about it & it a module put in behind the regular headunit's all VW approved & all that which enables you have a Satnav through your regular discovery headunit's (mine is a October 2014 6c BlueGT) nicely integrated & enabled like a factory fit software.
Was looking into getting my mirror link enabled for it but seems to be mix answers as to whether I can (my main dealer service & parts).
Anyway was only looking at doing the mirror link thing so can use Google maps but it cost almost as much for the Satnav upgrade VW dealers keep plugging, so thinking of the satnav upgrade......in that I assume what you are paying for is basically a retrofit by VW of what people would have ordered in factory.
Thoughts?

I think you're referring to the VW-approved Kenwood-Garmin Navigation System for the Composition Media unit (Polo 6Cs 2014 - 2017). Referred to by Kenwood-Garmin as GVN-MIB1 or by the VW part no. ZGB 5G0 051 259. You can ask VW to fit it if you buy from them (they might subcontract the fitting), or you can buy the unit from one or two online VW-Audi specialists and either get them to fit it for you or you can fit it yourself. It's easy enough to do. Instructions, with pictures, you'll find on the Kenwood website, I seem to recall.

I myself, along with a number of other 6C owners, have discussed this on this forum once or twice over the last few months, so I advise you look back through the various thread titles for them and have a read.

What put me off, and I think others too, was the uncertainty of whether there'd be ongoing charges for software updates for it, for map updates, and maybe a payment required for TMC (traffic warnings) reception. It's a rather expensive unit to buy in the first place, so to pile on further costs later would be anathema. That said, it's a bit of hardware that does end up nicely integrated into the Composition Media display (infotainment display), and the voice instructions are automatically played through the car's speakers. It's also an HD display. You'd have to choose quite carefully where the little GPS antenna head is fitted, as inside the dashboard somewhere is non-ideal. Ideally, you need a roof-mounted GPS antenna, but IMHO the next best place to fit the supplied GPS antenna head is at the base of the nearside A-pillar, just in from the bottom of the windscreen (stick it).

There are a couple of informative videos on YouTube about it, posted there by the guys at Advanced Incar Systems (Devon). Their website is advanced-incar.co.uk. They offer a nationwide fitting service, I believe. Incidentally, they advise using a card-reader extension cable with it, so that updates can more easily be done.

Hope that helps.

Yes is the Kenwood/Garmin VW approved system I referred to as you have correctly described.
Apologies it was not till I look further into the forum threads realised it has been a much talked about subject for Polo 6c owners.
From how the parts guy discribed it it's a straight fitment into the dash behind the headunit's that is plugged into said basic discovery unit my 6c has (ending 20A in the software version code number which means mine is the basic of basic ones with no chance of enabled android auto/mirror link being done - even though it appears in my menu) fully integrated as the option would had looked/operated as a factory option.
They said the £599 figures includes fitting (would not have a clue to do myself) by the dealer so was assumed that dealer fully knows what to do including antenna fitment & placing it. Till you look further into the constant updates the Garmin based Nav needs yes it get pricey.
The other way would be find identical unit to mine but form a late 2015 6c which I have been told had the the correct software in it to allow android/mirror link/etc to be enabled via the "key" software dealers sell.....but looked at that & to be honest a nightmarish thing as so many "copy's" floating around be easy to be ripped off with one you can't enable.

I was another one interested in this particular upgrade as mentioned but I've decided against it on the grounds of the extra 'top updates' and the poor signal strength received. I can't justify £600 plus when I don't regularly use sat nav anyway, and when I do I just use Google maps on my phone so it's a luxury I can live without really.
It would be nice granted but not a necessity.
