Nope, you can get a 75BHP with discs on the back. Mine says 16V on the back but I can assure you it is 75BHP, it does readline below 6000. It also has A/C. VW are very inconsistent about what they choose to bolt on and call it. I give up with them!daffy wrote:both the 75 and the 100 models have 16 valves. so.....
a 1,4 badge on the back (and rear drum brakes) is 75bhp
a 16v badge on the back (and rear disks) is 100bhp
also the 75 has a redline just before 6k whereas the 100 redlines above the 6k mark.
I'm fairly certain that the 1.4 means its a 1.4 16V 75BHP. If its coded and has the VW Alloys then its an SE. The others below that have no badge on the back other than 'POLO'

Arrrgh,
Like I said, VW confuse everyone, the only real way to know what the hell your looking at is to ream the oem codes on the delivery sticker in the boot. But even then no-one knows what half of them mean. The number of possible combinations across models when there are only a 12 or so simple options becomes very large indeed. In fact its 479,001,600 (12!) combinations, assuming they are independant.
So that must be a bit confusing, and its not that accurate because you can't have some options without others, but working it all out would be a pain. So there you go. Why not just enjoy it whatever options you have. And for the sake of argument the car that you were looking at is 75BHP - it has been decided by the king of the potato people.

there is, its known as the "16V". The 75BHP 16V is similar but is only rated at 75BHP.
The reason for these specifications being so important, I was told, is to do with the way the cars are taxed in germany, based on the BHP. The limits for different bands are 60 - 75 - 100 - 125, which is cunningly the exact limits the engines are limited to.
And again, you are right, the 100BHP model seems to be advertised as 100PS, which is not equal to 100BHP its less. 1ps = 1.07 BHP
