mk4 polo 1.4 16v '97 gear select prob!!

Hi
Im having problems find gear on my polo,
Ive been reliably told that there is no probs with the gearbox itself tho.
Its very difficult finding gear, when its in a gear its fine
could it be a gear selecter prob? and if so what parts could i need?
any ideas

sounds like the linkage... not sure what to replace tho - anyone?!
