Thank you so much, patil. Your post does clear my confusion. You're right. I thought that since the headlight switch backlight stays on all the time, tapping its connector would cause the backlights of the front dome light to stay on all the time too. Good to know that it isn't so.

Btw, the Passat dome light has a different locking mechanism from the Polo unit. There are no screws. Did you face any problems while fitting it in the stock metal frame? Like looseness, etc?

The new dome light fits snugly without any gaps or rattles, into stock metal frame.

Insert the light gently and carefully to avoid any folding marks on the roof liner adjacent to metal frame. Use plastic trim removal tool if required to push it inside.

Yes, no screw mechanism to fix Passat dome light contrary to our stock dome light. But there is a work around for it.
