CORRECT OIL GRADE FOR POLO GTI

Post by Rocky5 »

In my quest for buying top up oil for Polo Gti, I spoke to several different VW Dealers as to
what oil grade to use for top up. They all seems to confirm they use 5w-30 which is VW standard 50400/50700.
However, I wrote to VW Head office to clarify what oil grade does the factory use at the time
of production.
Here's their Reply:-

Further to your recent enquiry regarding the above vehicle.

Following our telephone conversation, I have spoken with our Technical Support Team who have confirmed that the correct oil for your vehicle is Volkswagen standard 508 00.

If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us on the details below.

Thank you for your recent contact to Volkswagen UK.

VW standard 508 00 would require 0W-20 Grade !! I also understand this latest standard is not backward
compatible.

So I am now confused.

Any thoughts guys?

Well ... there are several options. It depends on what oil interval they setup for your car. But by official erwin document polo can use 3 grades of oil. It they setup 2years/30 000km oil change interval then 508 (0w20).

Is there not any oil info labels on the slam panel - my daughter has an April 19 reg'd SEAT Leon Cupra and it has a "504/507" label on the slam panel, so I got her to buy a "Castrol 5W-30 Prof Edge" top up pack to keep in the car. I've never worked out how/why VW Group has always been a bit vague in term of exactly which spec and weight of oil that they say is what your car needs. I was quite glad to see that SEAT had at least pointed out which spec of oil to use. That SEAT Leon Cupra's engine is be to the original new testing regs, so maybe you asking about a car that conforms to the later, and current testing regs/requirements, and that is why the lower viscosity 508 oils are being spec'd for it.

Edit:- mind you, even that table above allows for 508 or 504.

If you drive a Polo AW, that's not the correct oil grade. You should use 0w20 longlife oil. Unless your car is set to a fixed interval (every 15000 km) on your instigation.
It's all in your manual.

See the worry in my eyes :P, it came from the dealer so if anything pops its for their account.
I also have the ext motor plan to 100 000 KM's although I only keep cars for 2 - 3 years but get very close to the 100K in that time.

I agree that that choice of oil from VW dealership is a slightly weird, normally, only normally, Castrol oils in green packaging and with only Magnetec in the name, are cheaper oils for older cars, this one is also titled as being Professional, so it will also contain a fluorescent marker dye, and as it is 5W-40 I'd guess that it also has 502 as the quoted VW Group oil spec seeing as it has been developed in conjunction with VW Group.

So, what is the VW oil spec quoted on the other side of that oil container - I'd expect an oil suitable for adding as top up only, to any current VW Group car would be Castrol Edge Professional 5W-30 and come in a gold coloured container and have 504 and 507 rating shown on the rear?

Edit:- the price does seem near enough, probably £13>£14 in UK.

Interesting I see it refers to 502:

I am still none the wiser but I am following VW advise and ordering:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Castrol-15A54C ... -20&sr=8-1

I checked my oil filler cap- no mention of grade of Oil to use. My understanding is mixing different grade of oil can cause serious engine problems.

Interesting I see it refers to 502:
Ouch, a VW main dealer handing a 502 spec oil out for use on a modern engine, now that is not very clever, better than nothing though. That oil was what was used back in 2000 and maybe up to 2006 on some low output/low tech engines. Gold packaged 504 is better all round and more acceptable for modern engines and as a stop gap/top up for 508 spec'd engines.

this makes me wonder what they actually put into your engine at service time because there oil is dispensed through a nozzle meaning the mech...associate doesn't probably have a clue either.

I've sent an email to VW customer care (at factory) and await their reply in this regard.
