Speed bumps - squeak - cost to fix

Post by cailbrin »

I am looking for some help to get an idea of the cause and possible cost to fix a squeaking problem with my 64 plate Blue GT.

I live on estate with way too many speed bumps.

Last week my car started making a squeaking noise from the passenger front side every time I went over a bump.

This has got worse, and I now dread coming on and off the estate.

The car is going in next week to have a iffy seat belt looked at, and I want to get the "squeak" fettled at the same time.

I need some help with possible causes, and a rough idea of what the garage might want to fix it.

I have a similar thing same car, I have been told it will be drop links or main arm bushes niether is that expensive been quoted 150 for busheds and 250 for arms complete by vw specialists.
Should be cheaper at local garage as parts are not that expensive even as genuine vw.

Thanks for the advice

I have just been out to pick up 2 bags of dog food, and on the way home the squeaking was a lot better.

Not sure why 24 kilo of dog food in the boot would improve things, unless the extra weight at the back changed the load on the front of the car.

My mk6 Golf GTD front suspension used to make squeaking / groaning noises going over speed bumps during the colder months, but not in wet weather. Dry front suspension bushes is a common cause, which possibly explains why the noise may disappear during wet weather. Not noticed the same issue with my 6c Polo GTI, which will soon be coming up for four years old.

VW may lubricate the bushes with silicone grease as a cure, but it’s often only a temporary solution.

I am going to want a permanent fix.

I get rather OCD about squeaks and rattles.

I am sure my local garage will get it fixed.

After that I need to look at tyres, which looks to be a whole load of laughs.

My car has just developed the same squeak. If it is drop links (easy to replace), then opt for Meyle HD kit. Come with a 4 year warranty. Undoubtedly the corroded bolts and nuts will spin when you try to remove. Wouldn't be the first time I've taken 'em off with an angle grinder. Normally use an Allen key bit or star bit and 15mm open ended spanner. Try PB Blaster 30 mins before you attempt the job.

Don't reuse nuts. Ones on the Lemforder or Meyle kit comes with nyloc nuts.

Another jack is useful to lift the strut assembly (place under lower ball joint) to line it up with the drop link. A really easy and satisfying fix. :D

I am loving your optimism that I will be attempting the fix.

I have 10 thumbs when it comes to fettling stuff, which would soon become 9,8 ....., as I came into contact with tools and other finger crunching opportunities.

I have a brilliant local garage (John Rhodes), and I will be putting my trust and money with them.

Thanks for the info, it is always better to go into the garage with some idea what is going on.

Although, this clip shows the pitfalls of the luddite (me) faced with tech.
