1.2 TSI Crankcase Breather PCV Valve - Petrol smell in cabin

Hi guys,

Been noticing strange petrol / engine fume like smells in the cabin of my 6R 1.2 TSI recently. Seems to happen more when the air con or heater is on.
Traced it down to the faulty PCV valve which seems to be common on CBZB. VW parts department close early on Saturday so traced one down from Skoda. for £18.



It’s completely snapped off like they normally do leaving half inside the crankcase. Is this retrievable? Secondly I only ordered the valve - part number: 03F 103 558 should I bother replacing the grommet in the crank case as well?
What are your thoughts and experiences with this job, any tips?

If it was me, I'd like to think that I would retrieve the broken off part so that I did not cause any issues later on.

Grommet, I'd think that it will be reusable, but, how to retrieve the broken part - do you have anything long and strong with a small hook at the end, if so ease that in through the stub, then pull back. Other than that it would be the cam cover that needs to come I'd guess, I have not had one of that version of engine so I can't say if that is necessary or if the cam cover can be removed easily and what if any extra gaskets need buying.

Again a guess, I'd think that some people just fit the new valve and hope to stay lucky as I've not so far read any "end stories" on this topic/activity!

I replaced mine earlier this year because it had broken. I did not have any issues with smelling fuel, I just happened to notice it when giving things a clean and look over. Mine looked like it had lost some of the plastic from the end, about a 1/3rd of the length I guess.

I bought one of those cheapo endo-scopes that you plug into you phone and had a little look inside to see if I could spot it, in hope it could be retrieved. However I could not find any sign of it. It's not like you can just pop the rocker cover off and have a look-see. I'm a real fuss-pot but thought I'll go with it.

Because of where it is, my guess would be, it's just found it's way down into the area where the crank case breather sits, as it's just above it (it is on my CBZB anyway) It's months since I did mine and touchwood, it's been absolutely fine.

I replaced the valve and the grommet. My thinking was it may be that the rubber grommet had become stiff with age and not been helping things.

On the Skoda forums one chap modified the valve by drilling out the plastic pipe section. Then replaced it with a brass tube that he epoxy'd in place.

i had to modify this because my cbzb valve got 3-way with 2 more inputs before going to the head. We cant buy just the valve and the one piece pipe is pretty crazy expensive. lol.

Well fingers crossed I can fish it out. Was thinking about getting a cheapo endoscope but for £20 not sure whether it’s worth it if it comes out.
Nice mod with that 3 way pipe though! Gets rid of the weak end of the PCV I suppose.

Went to collect the part from Skoda garage today! - All for £18 (excluding the grommet which i didn't purchase)

I was unable to retrieve the other end of the PCV valve I believe that a lot of the 1.2 TSIs have this problem and people are oblivious as I didn't receive any dash lights or even any error codes.
It probably snapped off a while ago but became more noticeable as it was drinking its oil and the orange oil light came on, I recently noticed a whistling on cold start that eventually subsided after the engine warmed up.
Tried using a long hook but i couldn't feel anything. My thoughts are that it had already gone inside quite a while ago, as there were no noises on first start up and it sounded much much sweeter and no whistling

Hopefully i won't have any issues further down the line...doing an oil change before Christmas but will post any further issues on here.
