Lowering - General Question

Just a quick question - I'm not a great fan of lowering but seeing that.....

1) Modern lowering springs are advertised as progressive (so my dentist might not get too much additional business)

2) My MKIV is bus high now and I think the 15's will make it visually seem even higher even though it won't have made a ha'pence of difference

3) It rolls like the General Belgrano now anyway

4) Coilovers are out on cost grounds (I've blown me budget for this year) but she keeps wittering on about what do I want for me birthday in a months time so as i can't think of anything else I'm thinking a set of springs!!!!

5) I also want to keep the std dampers too so I know you can't go too mad!!!

I'm thinking of dropping it - a bit mind not slamming it - and was wondering what the general concensous was for getting the wheels to sit a little more snugly (if thats a word) in the arches

30mm, 40mm, 50mm - what do people think!!!!!

I'd say 30 mm if you can get them. The standard dampers will survive a bit longer than with 40 or 50 mm and the ride won't be too nasty either. I don't like the ride of 40mm springs without uprated dampers at all... The dampers are what causes the ride to feel good or bad, so if you must use the stock ones, try not to go mad with the lowering. You can always switch to coilovers later (and you will, I predict).

another option is to source the 16v gas charged shocks (2nd hand?) which allow for 40mm without much trouble.

I lowered my last polo 50mm and i agree - it was too much for the non-gas shocks, but this one seems to ride fine with a 60mm drop and 16v shocks.

Hmmm thats a thought - but it boils down to the bottom line - I don't want to drop it too much it's an everyday car and I value ride comfort over looks but don't want end up with it looking bus high if swap the wheels.......

-40mm front and -50mm back

If you put -40mm ont he back you wont notice any difference at all. Infact it will look higher because the the springs being new.
