First post! A few Polo 1.2 TSI questions

Post by ReVo »

Hey guys,

Just discovered this forum :)

I've got a Polo 1.2 TSI 2016, been on PCP but I think I've decided to buy it outright. Was looking at the Golf 1.5 150 EVO but PCP was too expensive.

First Q - Isn't it the Mk5 Polo? Why does the forum say Mk8/9?

Second Q - Had it serviced today for an oil change/air filter change etc. When talking, the mechanic mentioned the 'three-cylinder engine'. I corrected him and said 'no, it's a four-cylinder engine', to which he remarked that he thinks he knows as he's just been working on it...
I got home and checked online, I cannot find a VW 1.2 TSI 90ps 3-cyl engine. Am I wrong?

Third Q - Is it worth getting a remap? Could go from 90 to 130ps. Is the clutch, turbo or any other component likely to fail?
Or should I just trade it in and get a 1.4 BlueGT? I've got around £800 of equity left in my Polo...

Sorry for the long post!

Oh dear, maybe you have chosen the wrong garage to do work for you, did he look like he needed to wear specs?

Maybe you can easily only see 3 of the 4 cylinders if you don't look interested?

@ReVo; There have been 6 generations of Polo, but the forum has historically named the mid life facelift of each generation as a new model / mark.

So in official VW terms, yes, your car is a fifth generation (mk5) Polo - more precisely a fifth generation facelift model. The launch of the fifth generation Polo was the type 6r and its midlife facelift, the type 6c. In forum terms, discussions on the fifth generation Polo are on the mk8 / mk9 (6r/6c) forum board. Hope that makes sense! 😁

I wouldn’t get too hung up on the name of the forum board, and whether or not your car is a mk5, or a mk8/mk9. The important thing is you’ve posted on the correct forum board.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

You are correct there, the only 3 cylinder 1.2 was an older version of engine that had been dropped before the 6C Polo was launched.
