RDS 310 head unit upgrade to bluetooth

Post by Snax31 »

Hi all, just got a 2010 polo 1.2 petrol. It is fitted with the RDS 310 radio which doesn't have bluetooth phone connection.

Can anyone tell me if there are any oem head units that have bluetooth phone connection that will be a direct replacement for the RDS 310?

Have looked at third party bluetooth units and also the parrot handsfree set up but ideally would prefer an oem unit if possible.
Have been looking on Ebay but don't have a clue what units would fit, if any, into my car.

Thanks.

If you want the best of the best I can only recommend the Kenwood DNX series which was installed from factory in the VW transporters. I had 2 when I owned my 6R. Upgraded it in the end to the top of line DNX518VDABS. A top quality nav with CarPlay and really is plug and play. The dnx525 is also good if you don’t want CarPlay.
Hope that helps. I know others have joy with the RNS510 which I never got along with.

Ebay has many listings of DNX 516, 521, 525 especially in UK. DNX 518 I have only seen listings of brand new units.

If you don't want to spend too much and still want an OEM looking unit, I'd suggest you to go for an RCD330G Plus or a RCD340G unit, which isn't expensive and offers many functions, bluetooth included.

I had an RCD310 and I upgraded to an RCD340G and I couldn't be more satisfied with it.

Thanks for info. One more thing, do these units mentioned above need the bluetooth module fitted below the seat or is all the bluetooth hardware contained within the head units?

Yes the RNS and RCD series will require a Bluetooth module fitting, never done it but I have seen its plug and play and doesn’t require VCDS coding. If you go with RCD30/40G it may not be necessary to have BT module as AA Auto and Apple CarPlay will provide voice. KENWOOD systems are all built in and do not require additional modules.
My understanding is the dealers install this when it’s delivered to them from the factory as my 6R had BT module from factory and it fell down from the footwell months later as it was stuck somewhere behind the dash. If they can do it, you certainly can.

RCD330G Plus and RCD340G units don't need any separate BT module, since they already have it built-in.
