Hiya,
I've got a MK5 16v with remote central locking, and i've got two of those crappy little plastic fobs which is seperate to the key for unlocking/locking the car, the ones with the rubber attachments. Well both of these have now snapped and I can't be arsed paying VW £45 to get another one which will just break in another week or so.
So, I know that the GTi comes with a Golf style 'Flip' key, as used on most VW's other than the Lupo/Polo, now is there no way I could get hold of one of these, have the remote reprogrammed to my central locking system, and have a new 'flip' key cut and attached, thus resulting in having all my stuff combined into one and not having a cheapo seperate piece?
Thanks,
Tom
Changing my Key/Remote key fob
it should be possible! i was actually gonna luk in2 it cos my mates got a golf n that key's slammin! the central locking works on waves and it can be programmed, but i dunno how much it'l cost! and i've got no idea bout gettin a key cut,u mite b able to take it to a norm key cuttin place and have them do it! no sure though! but overall it should be possible!
You know that little black thing that comes a little way down the key? That is the bit that is coded and talks to the ring around the ignition barrel. If you simply cut a key you won't have that and thus can't start the car. Its easy to tell when it doesn't work, you turn the key and nothing happens at all. I know this because I made a positioning network at work that uses radio to send a time sync pulse. And sometimes if you get it at the wrong moment you can't start your car on the car park! You have to take it out and try again.
So presumably, you have to get the transponder coded as well as the central locking interface. It might not be such a big deal as you think. Perhaps the key doesn't need programming, just the car has to learn it.
I want a flippy key now.
