Hello, a few pointers for new owner

Hi guys sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Firstly my name is Si I actually know nothing about VW's or Polo's but I do run a comany that tunes Jap cars. So what am I doing on here? Well my other half Jo had a 5hitcenteo which was **** so we got rid of it and she fell in love with the Polo. So we bought this from a friend of a friend....

Its a 1997 SE 16V? it has all elecs (windows, mirrors etc), just rolled round 60K with full VW service history. Oh and she loves it.... and I think it is nice too

although a bit slower than my tunned 200

I need some pointers as to what is best to sort on these cars.

I also have to fix to few problems with it. Firstly at low speed ie less the 5mph if you turn the steering wheel you get a 'clucking' type noise. I've come across similar problems in jap cars where springs become unseated in the cup. Causing the clunking noise. Could this be the same or is it something else?

Also the oil temp guage is not working which is a worry, but is this linked to the center heater switch's backlights not working?

Any thoughts would be great

Also is there a difinative list of problems and things to watch out for with the cool cars? I need a list of jobs to do on a sunday afternoon

Another thing is we have a huge warehouse full of jap parts.... will it be worth me looking to see if any bits and bobs fit on the polo?

also the car has a broken door lock knob thing. Where is the best place to get some new ones from? THe cover from the start of the rear wiper is missing too

Hey Si,

I can't give you a definitive answer on the cambelt issue, so check with a VW dealer to be sure.

While you're there, you can pick up that wiper cap and the locking pin thingie - it'll only cost little money.

I don't expect any Japanese-car-parts to fit, unfortunately. I know a guy that made some CRX seats fit in his Mk4, but it didn't look too good...

Any idea on the clunking noise coming from the steering at low speed and the temp guage not working (need to check fuses). Have either of these ever come up before.

Hi mate - I'm on the other end of the scale to you, had a polo now saving up for a 200sx

The wheel fitment is the same as Honda's so you should be able to fit some juicey bits there (a street race style Polo /droool), I can hook you up with someone that can sort you a carbon bonnet for a good price (as long as you let him use the mould again).

Obviously things like universal back boxes and air filters will fit as long as the diameters are right.

As for the cambelt - I recall most VW engines requiring a change after 60,000 but this may be wrong (double check with your dealer or haynes manual)...

btw - my polo had mirrors from a Toyota Celica GT4 fitted, so with a bit of tweaking who knows what you could fit. Jsut try bits for size against the car.

PS any chance of some discounts on Jap bits

If you need help advice regarding 200's give us a shout as that is what we do

Regarding the polo, still trying to work out the clunking noise but I'll get the car up on the ramps sometime this week. SO i'll hopefully be able to give it a check over. Also need to sort the oil temp guage

Anyone know if its possible to relocate the front brakes setup to the back. Reason why you ask

I have a set of 4 pots sat here off my 200 that really need a home. Allready seen the stud pattern is the same as hondas. This helps as we are in offical importer for BuddyClub so I might drop a set of very lightweight 16's on the polo. So I should have room for 280mm front brakes and my spare capilers. I'll have a look

Just need to measure up and look at fabricating a mounting bracket

if you're thinking of doing it... then do it

it'll only pick up the psychic thought vibrations and break on you, otherwise.

in other words, every 60k is a reccomended interval last i heard. only about a tenner for the part, and maybe a hundred if you pay someone else to change it.

and there's plenty nuff lists of problems on polos to look out for, maybe not as much as other cars but they stand out more if you know what i mean - if you're expecting it to be invincible, then every cough seems like a write-off. have a cruise round the forums

Sorry mate, not had real time to look into the noise mate (see cambelt thread

) but I did get a quick look and from experience on my other car (no a polo) which had the same noise. The problem was that one of the springs wasn't seated in the shock cup properly, so it was twisting. Which was causing the clunking noise. Hopefully I might get a chance to check this on the polo over the weekend.
