Is this Polo belt or chain driven?

Post by roastpork123 »

Hi I’m interested to buy this 2015 VW Polo with 1.2 TSI Engine:

https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-c ... 005901.htm

My question is, is it belt or chain driven? On the description it says it’s chain driven but after doing a little bit of research, I’m not 100% sure about that.

Please scroll the images until you can see the engine under the bonnet..

EDIT: Here’s the image to make it easier: https://pasteboard.co/JGHVrHVM.jpg

If if’s chain driven, is this the same engine from the prev years that’s widely known to have tensioner problems, etc. i.e. not reliable engine?

Appreciate your input, I’m still learning about automotive in general so I’ll be happy if someone can clarify my questions. Any feedback on the car will be great as well!

Cheers

Definitely belt driven cam shaft, if you can see the single ribbed black hose in that picture, it would be better to get it changed to the later smooth bored "rubber" pipe as that ribbed hard plastic one will cause noises when the EVAP solenoid is being pulsed.

Edit:- the pipe that I'm meaning is the one that passes under the small coolant tube that is connected to the coolant reservoir.

Thanks guys. So the description apparently is misleading. I will probably meet the dealer soon, any tips on what I should say, to politely ask/prove whether it’s belt driven not chain driven like the description says? Cheers

Thanks for the tips. I have actually seen the car before, and it did make a lot of noises, almost diesel-like. Is that the noise you’re referring to? But apart from being noisy, is it ok if I just leave it as is?

This is a short clip of how the engine sounds: https://youtu.be/cM6QFvxrMvU

You can hear distinct ticking noises if you listen carefully, and I just read that it might be a sign of bad timing belt due for replacement.

Does the noise on my video sound normal for this kind of engine?

Thanks again and appreciate your input.
