Polo brake shoe replacement

Post by Poc854 »

Tomorrow I will be changing the brake shoes on my polo and I'm just wondering if I need to remove the hub before I go out and buy the socket to remove it.

I believe it can be done without removing the hub,but it does make the job a whole lot easier if you do remove it.

Good luck let us know how it goes

In case you didn't know, the socket size for the rear hub nut is 30mm bihex, ie 12 point, that nut is, I seem to remember a nyloc nut so should not be reused or maybe you will get off with degreasing the threaded hub and applying blue Loctite.

Do you mean a very slight covering of that over the hub face to stop the drum sticking to it and on the outer face of the drum to stop the wheels sticking on - if so, yes though many of us have moved onto using ceramic loaded grease and/or aluminium loaded grease especially for the outer face if you have alloy wheels. I did use Copaslip for maybe 35 years with no noticeable adverse effects, but now I've moved on to ceramic and aluminium greases saving the last of my Copaslip for other areas. In the hub bearing I'd be using a high temperature lithium based grease or moly based grease depending on what the colour of the grease already there is.
