Some modifications might not be to a prospective buyer’s taste, and depending on what the modifications are, the potential impact on warranty will put some buyers off. Members of certain enthusiast groups might not be put off by modifications (e.g. members of Facebook groups, some car forum members), and selling a modified car to such a person might actually help the sale.

IMO it’s always worth considering returning a car to stock come sale time and selling the modified parts separately. That way, the impact on a car’s value is unlikely to be adversely affected, the car will appeal to a broad target market, and some of the financial outlay on the modifications can be recovered by selling them separately.
Yeah I get that. My car at the moment has a Milltek GPF back stainless non-res system, aftermarket wheels, and a carbon steering wheel so it can all be returned but i'd look to sell it with the parts on to a business that specialises in that area if they offer a good price but i'm happy with the car at the moment and will probably keep it another year but I am very impulsive so if I see a nice car who knows :D.

I do imagine however the sale of Polo GTI's back into the wild will hinder the prices of the Polo which is leaning me towards maybe selling while the market is strong.

I made this very point to a lad struggling to sell his Seat Mii.
It's all lowered and this and that.
Your average Seat Mii buyer wants standard, take the pimp bits off and sell them seperately....!

Well I've been offered a solid £17147 for the Polo from the company that bought my Golf R. That's a proper, confirmed price - no kicking the tyres, no chipping me down when they see it offer.

Probably not as bad for it as WBAC but.I get the impression that Motorway do a bit of this from talking to their agents and having to catalogue every stone chip (6 in all, 4 the size of pin pricks and 2 were about 0.75mm x 1.5mm which brought their price down £88. The agent was also pressing for a minimum price I would sell at, which made me think that the £17300 (then reduced by £88 to £17212 might be a best case scenarrio).

So I'm driving it down to Selby on Friday, getting a lift to York train station from them and getting a train down to Cheltenham to pick up its replacement.

Kicking myself that I filled the tank on Thursday last week and have driven just 22 miles since.

Price for good clean in-demand late date used cars do seen to be particularly strong just now.

What’s the replacement going to be?

The worldwide chip shortage is really messing with new car production and lots of cities about to impose ULEZ zoned means that people are looking for Euro6 compliant cars.

The replacement shouldn't really come as a surprise...another ID3.

It's really grown on me, primarily for the space it offers the family without having to resort to an SUV. When you've one car costing you 15p a mile and another costing 1.5p a mile (yes, I'm being tight!) with comparable performance (it does feel as quick as the Polo in every situation, as if VW are understating the performance figures by quite a margin), the Polo is just getting left unless the wife is already out in the ID3.

Although I got a great deal on the Life spec we have, I feel a little cheated as I found an even better deal.

Heritage VW group, way down in Cider country have a number of "Family" spec ones in stock. These are "old" spec, arriving just after the grant changes. With an RRP of over £36k, they were ineligible for the grant. VW put a price reduction in on the Family spec to get under the grant threshold and removed a few toys, but they've managed to apply the new family RRP to the old spec. Basically, for £800 more than I paid for the Life, you get Pano roof, dual zone climate, slightly more conventional seat cloth, full keyless (not just keyless start), full matrix LED headlights, load through in the back seat, rear camera (OK, it's useless when you have rear parking sensors), illuminated door handles (on approach) and autodimming drivers wing mirror. £28250 net of grant and deposit contribution, Inc optional metallic paint and 18" Derry alloys.

The wife was sick of having to readjust the seat every 5 mins because I'd taken the ID3 out instead of the Polo.

The ID3 is doing everything we need from a car, and costing pennies to run - for comparable Golf money.

There was aconsideration to go for a Born, but I think the Born will end up costing me a lot more for basically the same car, same performance, less well equipped, with a bodykit and Sports seats.

I am following in your footsteps in the fact I am also potentially selling in the coming days, maybe weeks. Seen a nice spec Golf R and it's an itch that has to he scratched. I've been offered just over £18500 from a few local garages which puts me about £2500 in positive equity so that's the deposit for the Golf.

And tried just taking a fuel line off and letting the pump push the fuel into a bucket or you not that arsed?

The people I'm selling them to are good guys, and I'm going to do about 80 miles tomorrow in the Polo, so don't really begrudge them what will be half a tank once in Selby. Hope you're buying a new R because used prices on them are going daft too!

The R is a completely unflappable car, is you want noise, you'll get it in spades over 5k revs. It's complete lack of drama in use means it's not as exciting as you might think when driving it - very composed. Go Lapiz Blue and Pretorias.

Used it is unfortunately. Can't justify 40k+ on a golf. The MK7.5 R i'm looking at is Lapiz Blue, Gloss Black Pretorias, and the all important Akra exhaust. I've also got keen eye in the new A45s tho but gotta run it by the misses...

Yes, used prices are daft, but If buying new (i.e. a mk8 R factory order), I’d expect the worldwide chip shortage will mean extended lead times, and there probably aren’t too many ex demos or dealer stock mk8’s available for immediate delivery at reasonable prices either. I don’t think you can get the combination of Lapiz Blue with Pretoria alloys on a new R - it’s either the standard 18” Jerez alloys or optional 19” Adelaide or Estoril. You could always buy a set of Prets (expensive OEM or cheap replicas) and fit to a mk8 R though.

How much is the Golf you've seen? Like I say, people on the Golf GTI forum are reporting being offered crazy money for their GTIs and Rs, which will filter up into sticker prices being higher on the used forecourt.

Have a look.on drivethedeal to see how much a new discounted R comes in at (I'm guessing £35k, but RRP perhaps over £40k to get hit by £475 VED). Get a fixed price p/x on yours and wait for the new one to be built?

If you're financing from VWFS, the APR on a used one is going to be 9 or 10% APR vs 5% on a new one - makes quite a difference to the monthlies.

Trouble is, most people buying a used car at the currently inflated prices are at risk of big value drops when the chips start being supplied normally and new car production is as it should be. Could be in for a big hit of depreciation. My £2k gain in selling now could cost the next owner an extra £2k loss in selling after already paying £2k extra for buying it. Its like lockdown dog prices all over again (although I'd hope no-one sells used dogs for profit!)

The car is about £24.5k and I got a quote with £3k down for £315 a month which isn't much more then I pay now and i'm 2.5k up on my car so it is tempting. And I did have a look at finance in the Golf R a few weeks ago but if i'm going to be paying £450+ a month it'll be an A45s, but thank you for your wise words.

Checked with VWFS and I'd have to put a wee amount to WBAC's offer to clear myself.
I could possibly make the settlement figure or even a profit if I sold it privately, given WBAC are XXXX less than market value.
My desire to ditch the car now has to weighed up with the hassle, and I'm erring towards 'cannot be bothered'

If you really want rid, try motorway.co.uk I'm pretty sure they'll beat WBAC, and out of principle I'd not use WBAC just because those Philip Schofield ads are so annoying.

What would you buy if you did ditch it?
