How big is the fuel tank?

Post by mirceaculita »

How big is the fuel tank on my 1.2tdi diesel?

The internet says it's 45L but I just got 45L in the tank while my car said it still had over a quarter of fuel left on the tank.

45 litres according to this 2011 6r Polo brochure - link below. My experience of car fuel gauges is a that they’re not that accurate.

There is a section of a fuel tank that is reserved for vapours, and it can hold up to ~13l but is not a good idea to fill it.

I used to fill it up whenever I drove from home to my parents. It was about 900km.

yeah I noticed. After a refill I would drive for 300km and not see the fuel go down

The digital fuel gauge is really inaccurate. As you say, my first 'bar' of fuel only disappears after 150-200 miles. I've done 290 miles on my current trip and the fuel gauge claims I've got 3/4 of a tank left, so that's clearly inaccurate. Then it drops and drops once you're below half tank.

Guessing the fuel tank size may differ between models. Pretty sure mine is 45 litres, on my 1.2 tdi from 2013. I fill up normally with <20 miles range left; and every fill up is 40-41 litres.

I don’t usually watch my fuel gauge that closely, although with the recent problems of getting fuel in the UK I have been keeping an eye on it this last week. In my current model Polo (2020 Polo GTI+) the fuel gauge dropped from an indicated 1/2 full to 1/4 full quite quickly.

As far as I know, all 6r and 6c model Polos have the same size fuel tank at 45 litres. Strangely, the larger current Polo (the AW model) has a smaller fuel tank at 40 litres.

Could fill 45 liter of fuel in not completely dry/empty fuel tank. Not sure how much was there already.
Filled till neck or fuel opening.

Surprisingly VW Connect Go App kept showing 42L as "Tank Fill Level"
Digital Fuel Gauge in instrument kept showing Full.

After some driving around, it is showing 38L on app and one less gauge on instrument cluster.
So rough calculation with respect to current average/milage, it could point to 50 L ie fuel tank + hose/pipe till fuel opening.

Looking at this old discussion thread at the link below (in particular RUM4MO’s post 7th from the bottom of page 1) regularly filling the fuel tank ‘to the brim’ up to the fuel filler cap isn’t a good idea.
