Wastegate rattle

Post by Le_Combattant »

Hi guys !

Since day one I've my Polo (I'm his second owner) I had a rattle coming from the engine bay. A metalic and very annoying noise coming between 1000 and 2000 rpm and higher.

When I let the car to my dealer for the 90000 km overhaul they said it was normal "Because the car is not in normal condition".
Understand: the car is not running and the engine is idle.

LMAO

As aircraft technician, it's the most stupid thing I ever heard.

But finally, yesterday I found it.

It was coming for the connection between the wastegate actuator and the wastegate it self.

The connection seems to be not tight enough and able the rattle to appears at certain rpm.

With a quick research, it's a common issue with VW engine (2.0l mainly) but 1.2 and 1.4 TSI had also the issue but I found no fix except for the 2.0L engine.

At least your dealer tried to get you to ignore it, so 10/10 to them for trying!

I've never tried to get a good picture of that area, some people have had that replaced under warranty, ie the complete turbo assembly and the replacement had a slight different "shaped" wastegate rod/link design, so I think that change will have been due to design issues(errors) for the original version.

Has anyone, that you have read about, ever successfully fitted the revised clip to this version of wastegate rod linkage - or does this design not allow that to be done?

Yes, he tried.

But because I'm mechanic (yes not on car but airplane) I like to found what's wrong.
A metalic rattle is not normal.

I'm still looking because the clip made by VW to stop the rattle is for the 2.0L engine.
But on the 1.2 CJZC, nothing. The wastegate actuator, link, is different.
