5W-40 (VW 502) in a GTi?

Post by Bepis »

As the title says can a VW502 5W-40 oil be used in the 1.8TSi? More specifically Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W-40, currently use Mobil1 5W-30 ESP, VW502 and VW504 respectively.

Mainly asking as I want what I've got to last as long as possible and a thicker oil may help at higher RPMs and temps.

Owners manual says it can be used on a fixed service interval which I more than meet by changing my oil every 5k miles. Other than slightly worse MPG would it affect any of the variable valve control or anything else?

Am I right in assuming that the higher SAPS won't cause any valve deposit issues as this version of the EA888 got port injection?

I'd stick with the Mobil 1 5w-30 as it complies with the later 504 and maybe later VW oil specs, I've been using that for many years, it is just a challenge to be able to buy it for "sensible" money, currently got some coming my way for this year's 2 car services in the summer.
