Hi
I hope someone could offer some advice. I have had issues with the aircon lately and a local garage topped up the gas a few months ago and things seemed to work but this last week I suspected something was up.
What I would like to know is should the main engine fan come on when you turn the aircon on? - we also have a touran and I noticed that turning the ac on makes the fan start immediately but on the polo the fan is not coming on at all. I assume we either have a leak or a compressor fault or something else.. yesterday the car also reported a random stop/start error but today this has cleared and the stop/start is working as normal.. all very odd.
Any advice appreciated before we chuck more money at it.
cheers

You are correct that putting the AC on activates the radiator fan, but if the refrigerant is low ie you have a leak , then the ecu won’t switch the ac compressor on so no fan either.
As you have previously had it regased I suggest you start there and get it properly tested for leaks using OFN (oxygen free nitrogen) under pressure this will detect even the smallest leak when done correctly.
Simply topping up the gas is not fixing the leak , it is also an offence to knowingly charge a system which has a leak ,discharging CFC’s into the ozone

Thanks for your reply.
I will have to ask the garage if they have the ability to do a full leak test - if not then I will have to shop around.
Cheers
