noise when first use of car after a few days no driving

Post by LEEA123 »

Not sure how to describe this, but car got booked in for feb just to look at a few things for me, but noticed something new over the christmas holidays . Not really used the car, and i can see all the discs front and bake with that rusted look . When i start the car and go to reverse from drive . I get a kind of noise and i am sure it is something to do with the build up on discs and not using for a few days . Just a sort of a clunk noise, as i start to move for a split second.

Does not do it again when i drive it nect time that day or the next, It just seems to do it if not driven for a few days at all. and the first time i move off and the discs are as brown as anything . So not sure if something could be sticking at all , after car sitting there for a few days . I will ask them to look at it, but i can not reproduce it at all.

If i use it daily as normal, does not do it at all , just if sat there a few days with no use at all and discs all brown.

Damp and wet weather will cause the brakes to get a light coating of rust. This is normal on all cars from my experience and is gone the first time you brake. Can cause the car to clunk a bit on breaking until it’s gone.

As @lancslad1985 has said, it’s normal. I get this if I wash my car and then don’t use it for a day or so. Oxidation on the damp surface of the cast iron brake discs results in the (normal) formation of that thin layer of corrosion which causes the brake pads to stick to the surface of the discs. The clunk noise you hear is the brake pads releasing themselves from the rusted surface of the brake discs as the car moves off.

Has happened with pretty much all the cars I’ve owned and is nothing to worry about.

Hi

I get the same..esp after washing the car and leaving it on the drive for a day.

If I had those issues you mentioned I'd cancel that booking for a variety of reasons; main one being our local VW garages will pounce on anything you have a 'concern' with and replace stuff that doesn't need it. for example I don't think that being told, with a worried look on her face, (receptionist) that brake pads with 'only' 50% of their life left, need replacing urgently.

Then there is rust on the rotors etc etc

I'd look at the pad wear yourself if you can see through the alloy wheels to the pads in advance if you do decide to drop it in and you trust them - your decision though.

YMMV
