Bumper Protector

Post by Sbal »

Hi, I thought I'd share details of a bumper protector I bought for the Polo. I find bumper scratches are a real bugbear so wanted to fit one before the Mrs and kids wreaked havoc. Some protection is better than none 😁

Forgive the carbon look, but I thought it would look good and imo it suits the car. The fitment helps widen the appearance a littleof the rear of the car too, which is a good thing! Have a look...

I’m personally not a fan of bumper protectors (if I was to fit one to my white car, I’d go for the ‘invisible’ clear vinyl PPF type). However, I appreciate that if a car’s used for family duties (mine’s not), then it increases the risk of rear bumper scratches from carrying all manner of items in the boot. The carbon fibre protector looks OK on a black car IMHO - it actually looks quite thick so it’d be worth checking there’s adequate clearance between the bumper protector and the tailgate in case there’s a risk of of paint being rubbed off the bottom edge of the tailgate (seem to remember there were one or two instances of the lower edge of the tailgate rubbing the rear bumper on early pre-facelift cars and removing paint, and that was without a bumper protector fitted).

One question; in view of your dislike of bumper scratches, if the actual bumper protector gets scratched do you then replace it with another new bumper protector to maintain the scratch free look? 🤔

😁 great question about, what if the protector gets scratched? Having seen one of these protectors before, they're high quality and resistant to normal day-to-day abrasion that would normally mark the bumper paint. I think if something heavy with a sharp edge was to run along it, it would certainly gouge out some of it. But in that case, it's done its job 🙂

I also have a bumper protector, along with a door sill protector. Mine are both clear, though. I liked it a bit more that way, as a dark color, like carbon, is a lot more contrasting to my silver car. The one in the door sill is almost invisible in the picture.

Clear looks good! Yes, anything else wouldn't suit Silver paintwork :)
