6r GTI factory Bi-Xenon Issue

Post by nathwon »

Hi all,

I’m new to this forum and it’s my first time posting! Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

I recently purchased a 2013 6r GTI with factory bi-xenon’s. But now I have an issue where the passenger side high beam does not work. I have checked the shutter and can see that it is actuating every time I flash the high beam but the light does not get projected. The dipped beam works perfectly fine so I believe the bulb shouldn’t be an issue (correct me if I’m wrong!). Has anyone else come across this or have any ideas what the issue maybe?

Thanks,

Nathan

What happens if you put the left headlight assembly on the right and vice versa? Check all combinations like low beam on/off, indicators etc please.

Thanks for the reply! So I have tried the indicators and with low beam on etc, they’re all working fine. I swapped the two around and found that it’s just the passenger side that doesn’t work. Any further ideas on the issue? Sorry I’m not too familiar with the mechanisms within the headlight unit.

So if I interpret correctly, the problem stays at passenger side?

And please correct me if wrong:
- Both low beams work
- Both high beams work, when low beam is on
- When low beam is off, flashing high beam clicks both screen motors (the sound) but only illuminates one xenon bulb?

1. Correct
2. Incorrect. High beam only works on driver side with low beam on.
3. Correct. Only illuminates the driver side.

Check fuse 39 and 59 please. And just to be sure, 34 and 36 too.

I have used a voltmeter and checked all the listed fuses which they all seem to be working fine

Did you check both of the poles of the fuses?

If the shutter works it is not a fuse problem.
Maybe the problem is in the xenon ballast (7) or even the gas discharge lamp (14).

Some recommendations:
- Since it is necessary to remove the headlight assembly to install the xenon ballasts and gas discharge lamps, check/observe as much as possible that inside the headlight there are no damaged/burnt wires.
- You can try to clean the lenses in an unorthodox but efficient way, since the lenses/projectors cannot be disassembled.

- If you change any of the two lamps, change both at the same time, so that they project the same intensity of the light and color.
- Use a contacts cleaner/spray for all connectors, including external T14 connectors.
- Wear wizard gloves when handling gas discharge lamps. Protective glasses are recommended.

The reference number of the control units is the one indicated in the image that I posted in the previous post. 8K0941597E
The reference number of the gas discharge lamps has been replaced by a new one. N10721801 --> N10721805

Honestly, it is difficult to diagnose this fault, it is strange that the gas discharge lamp goes off when shutter is activated (high beam) and yet the gas lamp works with low beam, that's why I think it may be an electronic failure of the control unit for gas discharge lamp.
