Sunglasses Compartment Rattle Fix

Post by GTIMICK »

Hi All.

I have a 2022 Gti with approx 5k on the clock and starting to get a few rattles/vibrations.

1st and most annoying is the Rattle coming from the sunglasses overhead compartment. I've got the rattle even when the compartment is empty. If I push the bottom corner upwards it stops.
2nd is more of a 'vibration' coming from the silver trim to the left of the Gear shift.

Anyone else having the same issue or any fixes as I cant really be bothered to hand the car into VW for a day or 2?

Many Thanks

I’m getting rattles now, coming from both front doors or the B pillar area, and think it’s because playing loud base music looses some of the trim up a bit over time. The roof area is silent on mine. I think the glove compartment is also starting to make noise but you’re right, compared to the inconvenience of bringing it in to VW and them removing and refitting trim, could make it even worse. I have just decided to live and understand that rattles are just something that is character of my car. Since it is on both sides it is likely to be some loose wires or loose fitting that is just a natural part of how the car is put together. My pre facelift Polo did not make any noise as far as I can remember.

@Harrihealey02; loud music is likely to be a contributory factor of unwanted interior rattles and vibrations, especially where hard plastic trim is used. Maybe VW have also used poorer quality and fewer trim clips as a cost cutting measure on the facelift car to save a few pounds.

Surprisingly, the interior of my 2020 Polo GTI+ is still free of creaks, rattles and vibrations after 33 months of ownership.

I’ll probably jinx myself with this, but my 72 plate facelift has done 6400 miles and feels solid and well put together. Which is a good job as it’s likely to be my last VW - the only one I haven’t had that I’d like is a golf gti and I’m not paying that much a month….

Surprised you’re thinking of deserting VW next time; you’ve been a loyal VW fan and customer for many years. Which competitor brands would you be considering for your next car?

I personally wouldn’t want a mk8 Golf GTI; over three years since the mk8 Golf was launched and still far too many unresolved software issues for me to consider one.

I have. Think I just fancy a change to be honest. After over a decade in VW cars I’m fed up of looking at the same interior - the polo, golf, Tiguan and troc have all been very similar interiors overall. Love my polo gti but rapidly approaching 40 and starting to want comfort.

Probably looking at a Volvo or Lexus. Will cost more but both have better reliability ratings, particularly Lexus.

I finally cracked the code on those obnoxious vibration noises that plague my car whenever I blast some music. Turns out, the culprits are the rear door cards, specifically the side closest to the door lock mechanism. And when I lightly touch that spot on both doors, the noise stops.

You'd expect Volkswagen to have their act together when it comes to this stuff. They should've definitely thought about adding some foam or a sound deadening pad in that area to nip those vibrations in the bud. I don’t recall it ever doing it in the past, until the recent very hot weather. Maybe that’s expanded some of the plastics and they are vibrating more.

I snapped a pic to show you where these annoying noises originate from. It's right there on the rear door cards, close to the door lock mechanism. It's like they missed a vital spot that's just begging for some TLC.

VW, or any car manufacturer facing this kind of hiccup, better take note and step up their game. Throw in some foam or a sound deadening pad in that specific area, and voila! We can all enjoy a kick ass audio experience without any of those pesky vibrations ruining the vibe.

Take a look at the pic I attached It'll give you a visual on the exact spot where these infuriating vibrations and noise are driving me up the wall.

So did you take door card off? Where did you put the foam?

I didn't do anything to it in the end, I'm just going to leave it as it is because I know it would probably cause more issues if I were to remove the door cards or have VW do it. I also don't like the idea of VW putting the steering locks on the car as it has scratched my last polo steering wheel a few times, and they also scratched the alloy wheels (no proof but i am very careful and would have noticed if it was me) I think the area where the cards are vibrating is right on the edge so I could look to buy some sticky pads and pads them in that area so the cards don't vibrate on the metal. For now I'll live with it.

I had the rattle from above and have fixed it today, it was the reading lights, if you take the panel off you will find that the housing that the actual bulbs and switches sit in is slightly loose insode the cradle and this rattles like mad, well mine did.... I shored it up with rubber pads each side to stop it moving and no more overhead rattle ...

Just an update to my original post,
Dealer fixed the noise which was coming from the overhead reading lights, they put in some 'Special sound proofing tape' as they called it and its now cured.
They could not find any noise coming from the silver trim beside the gear shift.
I myself have found the noise to be coming from the centre console storage space under the Dual climate controls. If I squeeze my thumb on the inside and fingers on the outer panel it stops. Im just wondering how and if I can take the unit apart and correct the noise?

Thanks

I have an intermittent rattling noise from the same area in my 2020 pre-facelift GTI+. It stopped completely some time ago but has recently returned. It usually only happens on a specific stretch of road not far from where I live when I’m in a low gear and it doesn’t happen every time I drive along that road so I can live with it - the Polo’s a mass produced car with lots of hard plastic interior trim so I’ve always expected there’ll be the odd unwanted interior noise.

With the colder weather approaching, interior plastic trim also becomes less flexible which is likely to increase the chances of unwanted interior creaks, rattles and vibrations - more likely IMHO in the GTI with its firmer suspension set up, especially on cars with the larger optional 18” alloys and lower profile tyres. Sometimes removing and refitting items of interior trim in an attempt to track down unwanted noises and eliminate them can create additional unwanted noises if the trim doesn’t go back quite as it should. There’s also a risk of damaging the interior trim pieces when removing them, and some of those pieces of plastic can be quite costly to replace.

There’s a ‘sticky’ for a set of workshop manuals for the Polo; second topic from the top of the forum board for the AW/BZ Polo (see screenshoot below). The first post in that discussion thread includes a link to the workshop manuals - second from bottom of the list of manuals is the one for ‘general body repairs - interior’ and it includes a section on how to remove the centre console and centre console trim. Be aware that the manual is for the pre-facelift Polo, although I dare say the centre console in the pre- and post-facelift cars are the same.
