AppConnect USB socket information for Apple Carplay

Hi everyone, after (unfortunately) being quoted around 300-350€ for AppConnect activation (via dealer), I wanted to take a look at the USB socket that also likely needed changing to be compatible with Carplay (Apple), because only one of the dealers I asked confirmed that this will need changing too.

I was able to pull out my USB socket without taking apart the entire center console (fortunately) and found out I have the "6C0035726C" socket, which I understand supports AppConnect and Android Auto, but does not support Apple Carplay. It is purple and has the main cable + 2pins on the side.

Now based on the info from viewtopic.php?t=74656, I now need a "6C0035249B" socket that supports Iphones. My headunit is 3Q0035824B, SW version H28.28.133_STD2Plus_EU, 6C 2017.

After searching, I'm not entirely sure of a few things and wanted to clarify:

1. Let's say I get my hands on a "6C0035249B" with the extra 2 pins - is the install straightforward, i.e. unplug the old socket and plug in the new one? Looking at the pictures I found online when comparing those two sockets, It seems that the new one would be physically able to be connected (see screenshot below).

2. In case a whole new cable/harness is needed as well, how difficult is to install it to the headunit? (I'm almost certain that in that case I'll need to take the whole center console off ) I was thinking of attaching the new cable to the old one and just fishing it out from the side of the headunit via glovebox...

3. After the install the coding seems straightforward - Module: 5F and proceeding according to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH6wFeh8SmQ. Is this procedure different for different headunits?

4. I found supposedly two types of 6C0035249B, one having the extra 2 pins and one without (see links below). Is this just an error in the listing or are there really two types? Can they be differentiated somehow when ordering online?

Sorry if this gets your hopes up, though I was looking into doing the same thing and it seems you have all the answers already mostly.

I figure you can't just ask the seller of these what the difference is? I see there is a price difference which implies one may do more, especially if that is the one with extra pins.

I managed to order a new "6C0035249B" socket (green, HSD 4 pin + 2 pins on the side), just based on the pictures from the item listing, did not check with the seller.
Since the 2 extra pins supply 5V power to the USB port, and I currently do have those 2 pins, it made sense to order the same thing.

Some detective work followed - I checked pinoutguide.com and this HSD infosheet - https://www.delock.com/infothek/FAKRA_H ... hsd_e.html to confirm whether I need to do anything else or if this new socket is just a plug'n'play.
Good news is, the HSD 4 pin pinout for the socket should be the same (unless one is using a knockoff cable), the bad news is that based on the color of the HSD connector (e.g. green vs. violet), the little plastic tabs inside the connector are different (see the Delock HSD web above) which prevents using differently color-coded male and female connectors together, as was further confirmed by this video by mr fix: https://youtu.be/7yTYaxzeXfY?t=163

Luckily it seems that it can be solved by just simply shaving off one of the plastic bits that are in the way.

I plan to test it this week and should that work, book an appointment at the stealership for the appconnect activation code release, and code 5F myself afterwards to support iphones.

Getting back to this, I had AppConnect activated mid-April the official way but forgot to conclude this topic. I used obdeleven vag with pro subscription for the coding.

Here is a recap of what worked for me + some troubleshooting tips, hope this helps:

1. Check if your MIB is compatible with AppConnect obviously
2. Purchase "5G0 054 830A" AppConnect activation code/document via VW dealer and have them activate it (after them telling you several times that it for sure won't work )
3. Afterwards check if you can access AppConnect and if all 3 options (CarPlay/Android Auto/Mirror Link) are displayed -> this should not happen, but just in case, troubleshoot with whoever activated it, or try checking Module 5F > Adaptation > Vehicle Configuration and check if Apple DIO is ON and Google GAL is ON.
4. Check which USB socket you have. I managed to extract mine from the center console by using 2 small plastic trim tools without disassembling the whole console or damaging anything.
5. If you have the purple "6C0035726C" and you wish to use Apple CarPlay, purchase the green "6C0035249B" socket.
6. Disconnect the fakra connection and shave off a tiny plastic tab present on the car-side connector (follow this video https://youtu.be/7yTYaxzeXfY?t=163). This is to "force" the green USB connector to the "older" purple cable. This way you don't need to change the whole cable. For differences in connections, see the post above.
7. Connect the new green USB socket to the old purple cable connection (I suggest not fully pushing it down into the console trim just yet, without testing)
8. The socket now needs to be coded (at this point, I was able to see "USB" in my "Source" menu, but the socket did not read any USB drives or iPhones at all).
Note: I wanted to do this coding first (before AppConnect was activated) but I was not able to proceed as having AppConnect activated seems to be a prerequisite (obdeleven displayed an an error message "Function not available" when trying to code).
9. Go to Module: 5F > Long Coding > Byte: 19 (obdeleven shows this as Byte 19 USB) > switch to "USB ipod" (there are 4 options: Off, Charge, Full, USB ipod). I believe this is "bit 6 and bit 7" in VCDS, but please verify if you are not using obdeleven.
10. Go to Module: 5F > Adaptation > Channel: Interface for external media activation > set "connection 1" to "activated" (there should be 4 connections in total, only the first one is to be set to "activated".
11. Restart the unit by long pressing the power button for ~10 seconds.
12. Connect an iPhone via a USB cable into the new socket and go to AppConnect - CarPlay should now work. Optionally, also connect a USB drive and select USB as source to try that as well.

I wasn't fortunate enough to have a MIB that could have been "patched/hacked" (such as the one with NAV by using an SD card and installing FEC/SwaP codes myself) and according to my research, the only other option for activating AppConnect on my particular unit was by "physically" reading/writing to eMMC, but I did not want to even attempt that (or having someone else doing it) as I didn't want to risk bricking it.

How did you manage to get the trim off to access the USB socket? I've searched everywhere but I can't find a good breakdown/tutorial for my layout. I have a Polo 1.4 TDI mk5 and the usb socket trim doesn't pop out like other setups.

Hi, I managed to remove the whole USB socket from the top, without actually disassembling any of the trim pieces. I used two plastic trim tools, one on each side of where the metal prongs are on the 6C0035726C socket and popped the socket from its place. However, the procedure of the trim removal should be described in detail in the D3E801EDF42 workshop manual (general body repairs, interior).
