Hello all,
I recently bought a 6c which came with the small composition colour headunit and I want to change it.
I was wondering what are my options? I have read multiple threads but cannot fully understand whats going on.
I do not care about android auto or carplay. I just want a nicer system that will retain functinality with the car like displaying car stats and be able to turn off the esp (I have park pilot also)
The combo i want is 3Q0035820A / 6C0919603. The big screen up front and the unit in the glove compartment. Can i Just buy a unit from ebay and fit it?
Will it work on my car or will it need coding?
The second option i have seen is the RCD 360 from aliexpress which retains the car stats but is uglier than OEM.
Please enlighten me!

Re: 6C Headunit Upgrade
That will work fine, but Component Protection (CP) will kick in.
You will need to find someone to remove it (dealership can do it) and it will cost.
You can do it yourself by getting ODIS-S, a 6154A or 5054 OBD connector and an online account to do it. It costs for the account and connector.
Cheapest is to find someone who can do the CP for you.
You will also need to extend the quadlock wiring loom.
The composition colour loom ends behind the head unit in the dash. This will need to be extended to reach the glovebox.
Use this:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006642229856.html?
This will give you extended quadlock, extended antenna and the cable to connect screen to main box.
I have found this loom still needs work.
It does not extend the 5V and ground for the USB connector.
It uses a new microphone instead of connecting to the existing microphone in the existing quadlock.
It does not have a Fakra cable for the existing USB socket.
For this I ordered:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000581400563.html?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005210993775.html
This way no cutting of factory wires and can revert back to composition colour if need be.
Or you can hack it to remove component protection by trying to install MIB Toolbox.
This seems to be easier to do with a nav unit that has 2 SD card slots. 1 SD card slot and you're out of luck.
But since I am broke and cheap, I am going the hack route first.
I'm busy with this now on my own 6C. Also have the composition colour and trying to install the composition media, but it has 1 slot so we're off to hacking it up or at least trying.
I have the 3Q0035819A unit with no nav and 1 SD.
The 6C0919603 part is the screen and generic.
From what I can tell the 3Q0035820A is single SD slot in the front.
There is another way to do it but it depends if that module contains what is called the iMX6 media processor.
Most information out there is for more complete units that have nav, etc.
It hasn't been an easy adventure this.

Re: 6C Headunit Upgrade
On another note, if you have a chunk of change you can look at Alpine ILX-705D or similar.
Includes vehicle system integration.

Re: 6C Headunit Upgrade
Thank you for the information!
A few years ago a friend of mine with a 6c had purchaced an unlocked dicover pro unit from a golf from a company that did retrofits.
We fit it in his car an now that i remember it had this quadlock extension and it was truly plug and play.
However as i recall after fitting the unit (there was no compoment protection since it was unlocked) we had a lot of problems. For example we couldn't turn off the esp via the unit and there was no physical button on the car. Also he lost the park assist function and i recall the bluetooth audio playing very poorly. We did discuss it with the seller who did not provide any further assistance.
Could all those problems come from the fact that the unit came from a golf?
Will a composition media unit out of a polo retain all the factory functions?
Also returning to the rcd360 option, does this unit retain functions like car stats, esp control and park assist?

Re: 6C Headunit Upgrade
The unit I've brought to upgrade on my 6c was from a golf, as long it support the function, it's just need to correctly long code and adaptation. For example the unit I brought comes with direct tpms coded, but my car uses indirect tpms, so I need to make change to the adaptation using odb11 or vcds which only involved changing one value.

It will need adaptations and long coding.
The Golf it came from would have different settings.
You'd have to set the options to match what your car has.
I would assume the Golf would've had physical buttons for all the useful stuff.
If it came from a 6C it'll probably work fine.
The 3Q0 035 319A unit I purchased is probably similar to your 320A variant.
I plugged it in without the canbus connected. Radio worked fine. All settings were there.
When I hooked up the canbus the CP kicked in, so no sound but I could get to all the car settings as before.
I have no info on the RCD360.
I am also annoyed with the ESP and TPS reset not being physical buttons as on the 6R and on the GTI 6C.
Also the dash lighting is in the menus now, all done through canbus messages.
Been looking into that too, but every part costs a bit. One thing at a time.
