Damaged while in for repairs

Post by CarbonChaos »

Hi guys just thought I would share this , so where to start, deep breath.
So my daily a 2007 9n3 1.4 SE currently at 103K and due for it’s annual MOT in 6 or so weeks,I have noticed a SMALL rust patch on the nearside (left hand) outer sill which I attacked with a sanding disc and sure enough there’s a hole,ok no big drama just find someone who can weld willing to do the job at a reasonable cost and move on right .
Found a small place who came recommended sorted a date and price all good, dropped it off, waited for the call to say it’s all done and off to pay and pick it up.here’s where the trouble starts .
The guy has a 4 post ramp and has driven up on to the ramp without thinking oh hang on this car looks lower than standard (30mm eibach pro kit not slammed) also fitted with a mint never repaired bluemotion lower front bumper extension and the correct addition extension behind to fix the bottom edge.
Bumper comes in to contact with his ramp ,car comes off badly, what to do next ??
These parts are obsolete and very rare second hand in mint condition.

Yes it’s a17 year old car but it’s in good condition, this is the first hole I’ve found and was due to a rock or object damaging to stone chip protection on the sill panel.
The guy said he would pay for repairs but where am I going to find another lower bumper trim piece
that’s is in good condition? It’s just a pain in the a** really I could do without.

It’s always really annoying when these things happen. In addition to the damage to your car, there’s the inconvenience factor as well if you’re without your car while it’s being repaired.

I had an ‘argument’ with a low steel post in my mk6 Golf GTD many years ago that damaged the lower edge of my front bumper. I found a company that did plastic bumper repairs and they plastic welded / filled the damaged area and repainted it. I’m pretty OCD about my cars and even I couldn’t tell it had been repaired.

So if you can find a repairer in your area that specialises in plastic welding / repairs to plastic bumpers, they should be able to advise on the feasibility of a repair, rather than trying to source a replacement. It may be possible to close the crack by repairing from the reverse side with a material such as fibreglass matting and resin and filling along the crack from the front, filling the scuffed area on the underside where made contact with the ramp, and then repainting.

Good luck 🤞. Please update this discussion topic with developments and the outcome.

Thanks for the reply,I have indeed found a local(ish) company via instagram who’s work on plastic bumper and interior repairs look amazing and have arranged for them to view the damage on Tuesday.
That’s also my concern with getting it repaired I’m a nightmare for bodyshops,if you can get it right first time you will have my custom forever.
The VW part number for this front bumper extension is 6Q0 805 903 D if anyone has a decent part available I’m willing to pick it up .
