How My VW Polo Saved My Life in a Serious Accident

Post by Harrihealey02 »

Hi all, I want to use this opportunity to say how safe the polo is as it saved me in a pretty severe accident. I was driving down a country lane, and came to a bend a bit too fast and also skidded on some mud that was just prior to it, and went into a tree at about 50mph. All airbags deployed and the emergency sos system activated. I was unconscious but when I woke up I could hear a lady on the phone asking if I could her her and it was the 999 operator. One thing to note is I did break my humerus badly from the middle airbag going off as when the car hit the tree, the centre airbag opened and the car pivoted at an angle which forced my arm into the path which fully dislocated my humerus. Other than that I had severe pelvic injury pain wise but undisplaced sacral fractures on both sides. I will attach pictures of the car and how it held up pretty well. Remember trees do not move so the car did its best to protect the occupant compartment.

Hells teeth it’s amazing looking at that car that you are still here. Speaks a lot for the safety of cars. Hope you make a swift recovery.

Wow! 😲. Cars can be replaced but people can’t so it’s great to hear you’re reasonably OK.

Looking at your pictures, the passenger cell of the car looks pretty much intact, which is a testament to how safe modern, well designed cars are and something you’re no doubt very thankful for. The front looks a mess but it took the impact and crumpled to absorb the energy as it’s designed to.

All the best for a speedy and full recovery!

Oh, My God !!!!

Luckily you're alive. The car did its job in terms of passive safety.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the well wishes! It reminds me of how much cars have improved in passive safety over the last 25 years. If this had been a car from the 90s, there’s no doubt I’d be surprised if I was still here!

Holy s**t.

Well good thing the Polo AW crash test from 2017, 2022 been rated 5 star in the Euro Ncap
50mph that's like 80km/h, that's dam fast to meet a tree. Well from the pictures it does look like the car absorbed alot of impact.

Hope you get well soon. Drive safe out there.
