Boot release polo 2016

Good afternoon

My sister in-law has a polo 1.2 (I think) 5 door 2016 model and her boot release hasn't worked for over 12 months. She took it to a garage who said its common that the release mechanism inside fails and give her a part number for order and said it was easy enough to install so I've done as followed on YouTube and unfortunately after putting the new part in the mechanism still isn't work. Next thing to try was replacing the boot handle (big VW circle), I couldn't find identical part number (hers was 6C and this was 6R) however I tried it and it still doesn't work. I'm stuck now and can only think it's the electrics? Does anyone have any ideas where I should be looking next?

Try checking for broken wires in the tailgate to body tubing grommet, the black rubber tube you can see once the tailgate is open.
