Best product for side window trims?

Post by funkyg »

Can anyone recommend a product for the trim around the side windows? I normally use 303 Protectant on my black plastic but it doesn’t seem to give a great finish on these trims after washing. It’s fab on proper black plastic though.

Assume you’re referring to the rubber trim around the windows?

Some (harsher) car washing products - or hard water - can cause water spotting on those rubber trims, and over enthusiastic use of a pressure washer can also (permanently?) damage their appearance by degrading the outer surface.

I live in a hard water area but never needed to apply a dressing to the window trims in the four years I owned my Polo GTI+ (I no longer have the car). I rarely use a pressure washer to clean my car these days. I always use a good quality ph neutral car shampoo when washing any car I’ve owned (pre-rinse and ‘safe’ two - or three - bucket method, ph neutral shampoo and long pile wash mitt, dry using a combination of my warm air dryer and plush drying towels) and that seems to be sufficient to keep the window trims - and the rest of the car - looking good and fresh.

Rubber trim dressings tend to be relatively inexpensive, so if no one else contributes to this discussion thread then I’d suggest checking out the customer reviews of the products at the link below - and other similar car care product retailer websites - to help you choose a suitable product. It’s likely that any rubber trim dressing product will need to be reapplied fairly regularly though to maintain a decent appearance of the rubber trims.

Alternatively, have a look on Detailing World forum - I’d suggest trying the ‘Wheels, Tyres and Exterior Trim’ forum board first, or use the search function on that forum.

Thank you SRGTD, yes it's the thick rubber trims that run between the door and the window.
Luckily for me I don't live in a hard water area, but I will have a look into the pages you suggested for suitable products.
