Non start but cranking

Post by Amexotics »

Hi, thought i’d through a post on here as been helpful in the past. Working on my brothers 9n3 54hp.

He called me earlier in the week claiming the car had cut out on him and won’t start. I believe he stalled it personally as he’s just started driving. I confirmed it wasn’t starting but cranking fine and sounds as if if wants to go. Checked for fuel at the rail and decent squirt came out the nipple but after cranking a few more times and rechecking almost nothing came out. That leads me to believe there’s some sort of fuelling issue. I plugged into launch and had these codes stored

P0441 - (believe this is completely unrelated as been popping up for months with intermittent EML and rough idle) - need to order evap valve
P1156
p1633
p1250

Now none of the codes scream non-start to me but definetly showing issues with fuel air mix. I cleared them so i could try cranking again and seeing if anything came back.

Once i cleared the codes the car started absolutely fine no warnings. And drove okay for the next couple of days (even though i advised against this) He called me today saying car won’t start again and claims he’s had a few rough engine moments when driving but could be the evap once again.

Any pointers would be appreciated, bare in mind i’ve only looked for about 20 minutes and hoping to spend some more time on it once it’s recovered later this week.

Could possibly be a crankcase breather problem, p1156 is a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) fault, the ECU uses this "vacuum" measurement + the engine revs to calculate the air density/flow, vital for correct fuelling.

In my opinion, it seems like an intermittent fuel issue. Probably, the pump, relay, or clogged filter, since the car starts after clearing codes but fails again. The codes mostly point to fuel mixture or minor sensor issues, not a hard non-start.

You should check fuel pressure while cranking to pinpoint the problem.
