2011 Polo 6R 1.2 CGPB - EPC triggered

Post by Dibbs »

I have (or the wife does) a 2011 Polo 6R (5dr) 1.2 CGPB engine, had it for just over 10 years - mileage is about 95K miles.

I service it yearly and do what it needs. Timing chain was replaced about 10k (3yrs) ago. Runs very well by and large.

Yesterday evening after dropping a friend off, the EPC light appeared in the rev counter & another light "car skidding sort of" appeared in the speedo. Loss of power. Needed to stay in 1st & 2nd gear - got it home. Turned ignition off & then back on, started engine and no amber\warning lights and back to it's usual self.

Plugged in VCDS and it came up with:

Code: Select all

I usually plug in VCDS a couple of times a year just to keep an eye on things & it's never had a fault. The most recent check was a few months ago, when I serviced it (including plugs). The idle started being a bit lumpy occasionally - checked with VCDS - nothing. And then changed plugs as they'd never been changed since we owned it (10yrs & about 40k miles). Lumpy idle disappeared.

The plugs were the correct Bosch ones (FR 7 HE 02).

I cleared the faults, they didn't come back. Let the engine cool down for a few hours and then took it for a good 30 min run on a dual carriageway - with no issues. Got home, plugged VCDS and checked the Readiness in Engine - Basic Settings and it was showing as 0110 0101.

Reading up on Ross Tech's website and Google - did the Auto Test and it completed successfully leaving the Readiness at 0000 0001.

After more reading around, I learnt that the Readiness kinda resets when you clear the DTC's and the last bit remaining (Cat) needs a bit of driving for it to go to 0.

After the run last night and Auto-Test, no codes have appeared again.

Any advice or suggestions? The plan is to monitor it & see what happens.

Thanks.

Does that platform has misfire counter like EA211? While idling the misfire always happens and sometimes ECU does not register it as misfire. Especially for my case, while cold starting and VCDS plugged in the misfire counter goes like 30 i don't know why, but it never triggers EPC light.

I think it is fine, it put itself into limp mode. Just track the misfire counter.

Few weeks ago my friend was driving a bit harder with his 1.8T and the same problem appeared just like yours, cleaned the codes and it is still fine.

Let us know if the same thing happens again.

Cheers

I think it does:

6350 - Cylinder 1
P0301 00 [01100101] - Misfire Detected
Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
Freeze Frame:
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Mileage: 153667 km
Date: 2026.01.05.
Time: 21:17:00

Engine speed: 843.00 /min
Normed load value: 27.8 %
Vehicle speed: 0 km/h
Coolant temperature: 60 °C
Intake air temperature: 19 °C
Ambient air pressure: 1000 mbar
Voltage terminal 30: 13.507 V
Unlearning counter according OBD: 40
Number of cylinder 1 misfires in drive cycle-Misfires cylinder 1 from engine start to engine stop: 176
Misfire detection: counter in driving cycle-CTR_MIS_TOT_DC: 179
Misfire sum counter: carb A-MIS_SUM_A: 0
Misfire totalizer-Misfires all cylinders per 1000 rpm: 164

the 1st one in bold, to me, looks like how many times that fault has been recorded in the ECU, in this case once.
The 2nd & 3rd ones are in that drive cycle.

Now at the time of the DTC & EPC being triggered, the voltage recorded was 13.507v which looked OK. However, looking at the full log, I missed a bit from the end:

End----(Elapsed Time: 01:10, VBatt start/end: 11.4V/11.4V. VIgn 11.4V)-----

within the space of 5 mins, i.e. pulling up outside home, turning the engine off, starting engine (seeing it was running fine), switching car off, going inside to get the laptop\VCDS, getting back in the car, IGN on & doing that Auto Scan, the battery voltage dropped to 11.4v. I totally missed this last night.

I'm wondering if the -5C outside temp was highlighting a weak battery & hence the issues.

I've got a digital battery tester, that puts a battery thru a number of tests, going to test the battery tomorrow & see what the tester says.

Will report back tomorrow.

Really appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Thanks
