Garage replaced Clock Spring / Squib to no success

Post by JIMJET843 »

Hi,

I recently ran into an issue on my 2017 Polo (6C) with my steering wheel clicking when turning and eventually the airbag warning light came on along with the steering wheel buttons becoming inoperable. After taking a look around on this forum it was a clear indication that I needed to replace the clock spring behind the steering wheel.

Took my car into the garage which have been great in the past for all my other needs to get it resolved and they've let me know that after installing the new clock spring, they're unable to clear two faults with the vehicle and these are U021200 & U108E00. Both relate to not being able to communicate with the steering wheel control unit. Though, my airbag warning light is no longer on the dash.

They've let me know that they're unable to investigate any more as they're not able to source the wiring diagrams for my Polo for this fault and have referred me to the main VW dealer as they're under the impression that it's either a fault with the Gateway module entirely or a wiring fault is present.

Really I'm looking for opinions on what to do next as I'm currently invested to have this issue with resolved and understanding what could be at play here, before I take it to the main dealer and empty my wallet. I do have access to an OBD tool to clear the codes though they're permanent to the car.

For further context, my car originally had the Squib 6C0.959.653 and has been replaced with 2Q0.959.653. I do believe the correct part has been installed and in my case, doesn't need programming to the vehicle? Also, the garage re-fitted the previous squib to see if it was a faulty part but were running into the same error codes.

Currently, my opinion is that the garage has potentially caused this issue during installation of the new part such as breaking a cable from the Gateway or the plug on the end, though I'm new to attempting to fix issues like this that I might be completely off the mark.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

I couldn't help you that much but I can confirm that the part they installed, is the good one.

I had the same issue as you (noise when turning the steering wheel) but no faults code.
I bought the "2Q0959653" (it's an upgrade from the 6C0959653) and installed it like normal.

No coding/programming; plug and play.

Thanks for getting back to me.

That’s great to know that the correct part has been installed! Since I’ve had the car back, I can definitely tell it much smoother to spin the wheel around.

I’m quite confused how the air bag warning light has been resolved but the rest of the steering wheel buttons don’t operate.
